For weighted i just added 0.5 to honors and aps which comes out to about 3.85…if I did it your way it would come out to be about 4.3 weighted, was required to take normal physics junior year and normal government freshman year. A lot of my b’s are 87-89 grr. Thanks for the advice, I am taking the ACT in october, since the 2 practice ACT test ive taken ive gotten a 34 and a 35…gonna go for that 36.

It was not meant to be insulting, just the truth so that he puts his efforts behind schools where he has a chance.

And no, I’m not a Cornell adcom, but I have been an ivy adcom.

You don’t get reality. This type of advice based on no facts is harmful. There are common data sets which anyone with basic stats skills can use to assess chances. A look at Cornell’s will tell you this applicant has no chance. There are no miracles in college admissions.

Cornelldream, Cornell is transfer friendly. A good year or two at GTech could land you there. Keep focus on getting a high ACT score, it will help later.

Hi again,

Sorry your dad doesn’t support you in this. All I can recommend is trying to keep your grades up as high as humanly possible, getting your SAT higher (or ACT if you find it easier) & adding the work you’ve been doing to your ECs. I’d count renovating condos and appartments as good work experience! If you’ve kept up the grocery store job consistantly too, you’re showing commitment. So I’d definately add both of those.

Good luck (:

like above^

write the so so sooo great essay and recom.

I’m round 3.6
and a dartmouthdreamer too.
let’s give it a shot!

A current thread on the parent’s board:

Valkarie-
I suspect hmom told you that you didn’t have great chances someplace and that’s why you are so angry. You are really going to wait around to find out where people were accepted to “use it against” somebody? What a ridculous waste of time. I’ll point out that this is a message board. Unless somebody is going to send everyone copies of their admit letters, they can claim to get in wherever they want. I’m sure everyone on here is terrified of your vengeance.

People come on here asking for honest opinions. I would think they expect people to give honest opinions. Nobody is saying you can’t apply anywhere you want, and nobody is saying there is absolutely no chance of geting in. People are answering from their experience. In fact, I think several people have pointed out that if he got his test scores up he would stand a better chance - seems like good advice to me.

^Bingo, I looked because I had the same feeling. Shooting the messenger is nothing new, but you do need thick skins to post on this board. And you need to take with a grain of salt the comments that are not supported by the facts readily available.

Everyone who really wants to understand their chances should start with Naviance if their school has it, then read common data sets and then ask here.

Don’t listen to them.

I like your chances.

I have a friend who went to Cornell with a worst resume that you. I believe the only thing she did better than you is GPA (I think her’s was .2 points higher). But you SAT scores and ECs make up for it.

thanks everyone
hmom- i agree, id rather someone be realistic with me, so i can get a real sense of my chances. I’ve decided to apply anyways, because I love the school even if my chances are slim to none. Do you have any recommendations of good match/low reach schools for me that give good aid? thanks

are you going ED?

Cause you really should… especially with that GPA

Your essay is gonna have to save you

I read this entire thread, and like Valkarie, I’m definitely rooting for you. I do have to agree with hmom/etc/ though that, as you already know, your chances are pretty low. But all you can really do at this point is write AMAZING essays, get great recs, and try and explain your situation the best you can on the app without coming across as whiny. Emphasize the hard work you’ve put in and try to put out reasons why you would be a good addition to their college.

Cornell is typically considered one of the “lower” Ivies, but it’s still prestigious nevertheless. ED should help you somewhat, but it’ll prooobably end up being chance
GOOD LUCK!! I reallyyyy hope you get in, you sound like you deserve to :)

Perhaps you have a chance at Cornell, and perhaps you don’t. However, you must understand that there are plenty of wonderful schools outside of the Ivy League that would love to have you—schools like Bowdoin, Pomona, Bates, Haverford, and Connecticut College. At such places, you’ll get a great education and great financial aid without having to deal with the stressful process of applying to an Ivy. You CAN get out of the brand name rut and into a good college. Harvard, Schmarvard!

Yeah I will probably apply ED and see what happens. I know there are plenty of other great schools out there, and I’m not really after prestige, although it is a bonus. I just really fell in love with the school when I visited, even though my cousin who took me hated it completely. I went on a ivy tour with her a year back. Lower ivy or harvard, the school doesn’t really matter, its what you make of the school and how it fits you personally that matters. A prestigious school that doesn’t fit you doesn’t do you much good. Cornell had the right balance that I liked better than any of the other schools I visited.
Thanks for the advice guys.
