Chance an EA Applicant to SFS?

Hey everyone,

I thought I'd make a chancing thread while we're all waiting for those EA decisions. I'll try to make this post as similar to my application as possible because Georgetown doesn't provide a lot of space for elaborating on EC's.

Any comments would be much appreciated :)

International applicant from Canada

GPA: It's hard to calculate because the scaling in Canadian schools is different. Here, an 86 is an A so 86+ is generally what teachers use to gauge work. As a result, my report card is mostly high 80's and low 90's. I would estimate probably around a 3.75/3.8 cumulative though.
Rank: Counselor indicated in his rec letter that my rank is in the top 2-5%
Course load: Full IB Diploma (another reason for my mediocre GPA)
ACT: 33 (34 English, 34 Math, 35 Reading, 29 Science) - took two times (first time 32); Retaking again in December
SAT II's: Took in early-November and still waiting for results (are not included in my EA app)

Extracurriculars (as listed on my app):
-Co-Founder and President of a youth non-profit that is now international in several countries in Asia and North America (I elaborate a little more on this in my main essay)
-Secretary General of one of the largest MUN conferences in Canada (attracts around 700/800 students a year); my topic for the short activity essay (I also talk about how I staffed at various conferences and organized a program that aimed to familiarize new or inexperienced delegates with MUN)
-Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper
-City Council Committee - Mayoral appointed member
-National Qualifier in Debate

Tick Boxes Section for EC's:
-Varsity Cross Country, Track, and Tennis
-Literary Magazine, Staff
-School Paper, Editor-in-Chief
-School Paper, Staff
-Chorus, Glee Club, or Singing Group
-Volunteer Work, Community Action, Tutoring
-Youth Religious Group
-Debate, Forensics, or Oratory
-Model United Nations
-Other Offices of Student Council
-Youth Parliament

Other:
Interview: Wasn't great, wasn't bad. My interviewer was pretty quiet and didn't ask a lot of interesting questions. She focused mostly on my EC's and schoolwork.
Intended Major: International Politics
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Did not ask for FA

I'm also applying to Yale, Stanford, Brown, UPenn, Cornell, Berkeley, and possibly Harvard and Princeton.

My matches/safeties are Canadian schools.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post :) Feel free to ask me to chance you back!

60% chance - just a guess. You have good stats and extracurricular activities but nothing too outstanding. Good Luck!

I think you’ll probably get in. It might be a little close. But, as long as your essays are strong(they were, right?), you’ll scrape through. Your ECs, Academics and Test scores seem right down Georgetown’s alley. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback!
@Maverick: I just chanced you back :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it’s more difficult for international students to get in. Hopefully they see your subject tests in time to evaluate. It would be hard to accept an international early with a mediocre GPA (for Georgetown), although it seems a high class rank, and only an ACT score to measure standardized academic merit. Since they highly recommend 3 subject tests, you probably won’t get in early if they don’t have any in time to evaluate. EA is generally for people who are ahead of the game as far as taking tests goes, etc.

@wizkid: Most of the time, it’s more difficult for international students to get into US schools. However, I don’t think it’s that much more difficult for Georgetown. I would imagine that the acceptance rate would be slightly lower for internationals, but probably not by a lot. In the international community, Georgetown isn’t as prestigious as say, Harvard or Yale. This decreases their international applicant numbers by a lot. For example, I don’t know anyone in Canada who applied to Georgetown early, but I know at least 5 people who applied to Yale early and many other who applied to HPSM. Because Georgetown isn’t as prestigious as some of its peer schools, I don’t think it receives the applicant numbers that make it much more difficult to get into. I could be completely wrong though - just a thought : )
Thanks for the chance!

No prob. I think they definitely do get less applicants than schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. (but not less than many more other schools), partly because, like you said, they aren’t quite as prestigious but also because they do not accept the common app. Good luck, though. How did you do on the subject tests. Have the results come in yet?

Haha thanks  Did you apply EA as well?

For subject tests, I got 730 in Bio, 790 in Chinese, and 700 in Lit. If I get deferred early, I’ll definitely retake the Lit and maybe the Bio.

I have a question though - do you think not having subject test scores will hurt my chances? On Georgetown’s website, it states that “Please note that the Early Action review is based on information from freshman, sophomore and junior years, so it is not necessary to rush fall subject test scores.”

Yes, it will hurt your chances for EA. They say that on the website, but I believe they will evaluate anything they get in time (I am pretty sure an admissions rep told me that). It hurts your chances because they will have to decide to accept you early on less information, and they know that if you are deferred, they will have more information with which to work, so if they are not wholly convinced, you might not get in.

I am assuming you are Chinese? Literature is a good score and Bio is pretty decent. I think you’ll get in at least in the regular round.

I think you have a very good chance. Your GPA falls into their range even though you may think it’s a little on the low end. Everything else looks spectacular and I think you are in. Best of luck.
