Chance an EA candidate please? :]

Hello! I just applied to Northeastern for chemical engineering and am wondering what my chances are.

Academics:
-Very competitive math and science high school
-Most rigorous curriculum. All classes are honors, except college classes (I'll have take 8 college classes by graduation)
-90.417 UW GPA
-Upwards trend in grades (GPA sophomore year 3 points higher than freshman year, junior year 1 point higher than sophomore)
-SAT: CR-670 M-670 W-720 (I took the October SAT and think my math broke 700)
-ACT: 32 on every section

Extracurricular/Leadership:
-Student Council: Secretary (10), Vice (11), President (12)
-School's environmental Club: Member (9-12), Assistant Leader (11), Leader (12)
-Assistant Coach for Soccer Club (10-12)
-Travel Soccer team (9-10), Team Caption (10)
-Class Council Representative (10-12)
-Yearbook Club (10-12)
-NHS (11-12)
-NJDEP Project (12)
-Human Rights club (11-12)
-Spanish Club (11-12)

Community Service:
-210 hrs with soccer club
-150 hrs with environmental organization
-40 hrs with red cross
-30 hrs for cancer walks
-20 hrs with Police Department

I would be very interested in the honors program if accepted too, so any additional info on that would be wonderful. :] Thank you!

Indeed, you have a fairly decent shot to get in. Im not sure about the honors thou.

With early action, you are almost guaranteed admission with those scores. However, honors is the top 10 percent of the admitted class, so it depends on the scores of other admitted students and each year it has been getting higher. Northeastern is very competitive. Good luck!

BTW: If you get into honors, they have a special HONORS ONLY dorm.

not really. I heard that non-honor upperclassmen also live in IV.

Right, but only Freshman honors live in IV. It is a beautiful dorm, but at the opposite side of the campus as the rest of the freshman… some good and bad as far as IV as an option.

My Daughter was accepted EA last year with a GPA of 4.2 (weighted) and had SAT’s of 1950. She did not get honors. They will see your college classes and you should have no problem I would thinl getting in and getting into honor… but nothing is a given~ remember that

Thanks guys :]
I did get a 700 on the math section, btw.
Anyone else have any information about honors? I feel like I may not get in since engineering is so competitive.

I think they take something like the top 15% of the incoming class and then screen them for honors, taking the top 10% in the end. My daughter did not get in but when I read the accepted thread, some were in with lower stats than she had. Whether this is because of her major, which is very small, or because of the fact that maybe she didn’t have enough of the right kind of EC (leadership, inventive, whatever they look for) we will never know. In the end, it was fine because she is busy enough with her classes and she’s also on a sports team. She had a 670 verbal, 690 on the math, and she also had 32 on the ACT. So I think all you can do is apply and then wait to see what it says when the acceptances are released.

A tidbit about honors as I got into regular NEU. After the first semester freshman year, you can apply for honors with a 3.6 or higher and you are pretty much guaranteed to get in. I had a 3.6+ but chose not to. Honors classes are not any different than regular classes with the exception of honors only classes(which you can take if you talk to the professor anyways, for instance I am in the honors capstone class for business, I do have a 3.8 GPA so that was important).

So the only benefit you get is honors dorms, which actually is mainly IV which anyone can live in so nothing too special there, it used to be West Village F which was honors exclusive and that was actually special.

With regards to your chances, I’d say 99% in NEU, 50% in honors.

Thank you guys :]

So what exactly is the benefit of this? If I get into NU, I know that I definitely won’t get into the Honors program due to my below avg gpa. I may therefore, be interested in taking this path.

I realize you said dorms, but do they have you move out of your dorm halfway through the year? And why would you want to do this are they nicer?

Other than the dorm issue, it seems that there really isn’t a benefit to this because you can just get into the classes anyway by speaking with the professor…

If the way I wrote this post is confusing, it is because I am confused about why someone would chose to join the Honors program. If anyone can shed some light on my confusion, it really would be greatly appreciated. :)

number41x some people just want to be in honors! (also I don’t think you’d move into the dorm until sophomore year, and I also thought you applied for honors for soph year but in that case I might be wrong) Honors always looks good on a resume and especially when competing for coop, the honors status might give you an edge.

That makes sense, thank you.

Just thought i’d add to this. I’m currently a freshman in honors at northeastern living in IV. The major differences are the separate classes and where you live. We moved in a week before everyone else and had activities all week to get to know people. I think the biggest advantage to it is that it really creates a sense of community and makes a bigger school feel much smaller. We take some of our classes only with other honors students and there are classes that are only offered to us that I have found to be some of the best classes. In response to someone who said that IV is not all honors: The first 9 floors is only honors freshman. There are no other freshman living in this dorm. The higher floors are sophomores and older and don’t have to be honors, but this doesn’t really affect the freshman at all.
Also, OP I had very similar stats to you. (2080 SATs 3.65 weighted gpa) and I’m a communications major. hope this helps!

Thank you everyone.
Anyone else on my chances/honors program information?

chance me please! I applied EA to northeastern university to the music industry program. I have experience in this field.
act:27
wgpa:4.42
gpa: 3.77

thank you!!

…someone reply lol

@Rake I don’t know about your ECs and etc. but your grades look like a good match. Your ACT is a few points lower (around 1820s on SAT), which stops me from saying you’re definitely getting in. Nevertheless, you still have a good/decent chance.

As for OP, your chances are pretty solid. As for honors, I’m not sure. But my friend is in honors and he had a 94 weighted GPA and around a 2200 SAT. Don’t get too worried though, they’re just guideline numbers. Best of luck! I applied EA too. :)
