okay, so I wont be the worst bearer of bad news because I’ve done my through research on a lot of different schools, since my stats are generally close to yours including the URM stuff too.

Rutgers- go for it, I say your GPA isn’t too low. maybe for CC, but cerainly not for Rutgers. write good essays, get them proofread. your SAT is okay too.

Michigan- AnnArbor is a definite no, this is because OOS they’re impossible and in state they’re impossible. They are a true numbers game.

Virginia Tech- a possibility here, although the GPA will always hurt you, I feel like you could come up with something that might outweigh in some points.

Maryland- yes

Penn State-U Park- no here, this school is like michigan, your GPA alone will rule you out.

Ohio State- go for it, admissions are a bit more relaxed but the education is still great.

The questions:
-do you plan to take the ACT?
-have you taken honors/AP classes offered? ( <– big one)
-were you lazy in the last few years or was it simply a result of circumstance, because your SAT and GPA dont match.

Anyway, I’m not too sure about your courseload throughout high school. Have you taken any AP/IB classes? Your GPA is rather low for some of these schools. I’m not familiar with all of them, but:

Rutgers - I would say Match, seeing as how you’re instead
VT - Reach, I’m afraid

It happens to be the result of laziness, I’m afraid… I asked this same question on other sites and most have said, “you’re SAT is fine for all of the schools you’ve listed, even on the higher end for some… but your GPA IS on the lower end…”, which in turn makes some of these schools low reaches, I suppose?

If I were to get a 4.0 for my first semester senior year (completely doable if I stay focused) and/or apply ED to Virginia Tech (because, at the moment, VT seems like the best place for me academically and from my standpoint now, I’d be willing to take this risk), then how do you all think I’d fare?

ED increases your chances due to interest being shown, and if you’re really interested in VT, then I believe with the right work put in and a true 4.0 in your first then you can pull it off. You have to show determination to improve upon yourself and then the schools, especially VT will take more interest in you as a candidate. any improvement you make that deviates from the previous norm will only increase your chances.
chance back.

It’s a good school. We’ve had a kid or two enroll into Harvard every year I’ve been here. Our academic team won the New Jersey State Championship last year and placed sixth nationally. We have the usual slackers (usually spoiled kids), but a lot of us do at the very least, fairly well/try hard. Nothing too amazing though. By my estimate, we’re probably a top 50 public HS in the state of NJ.

Rutgers - Match
Michigan - Reach
Virginia Tech - Low Reach
Maryland - Match
Penn State-U Park - Reach
Ohio State - Match

Is it possible to change your Senior year schedule? It looks pretty easy, and colleges don’t like students slacking off Sr. year. If you can, try to take as many APs as you can handle.

My school is twisted. After freshman year, unless you were already in an honors program for a certain class, you cannot switch into an honors/AP course in a later year.
