Essays: very good, about his grandfather's passing, and another about his love for mechanics (helped fix his grandfather's Bel Air).

RECs: Probablly spectacular
Interview: went smoothly

He has a low chance, especially considering he's an international applicant. Most internationals accepted to math/science-heavy schools like MIT have at least some sort of national or even international recognition (i.e. Intel, AIME, etc).

International applications at MIT are super-competitive. Without high-level proof of mathematical/scientific ability (awards), it's going to be tough, especially with a relatively low GPA (by MIT standards).

a 3.8 UWGPA isn't that spectacular.
His EC's are pretty average (I have a two national awards/recognitions yet I still worry about a rejection letter)

The only thing that will help is the fact that he isn't applying for FA.

MIT is need blind school for international students,so basically the fact that he doesnt need FA doesnt matter much.If he applies to Brown or Cornell, however,he will have pretty decent chance ;]

Hes applying to 23 schools:D:D:D.... Cornell is on his list, Brown isnt. Hes also applying to places like Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, Duke, Penn, Carnegie Mellon etc etc etc etc etc.
