Chance an International student please...

So I looked around the threads here, and got pretty much intimidated by people's scores, EC's and all that stuff, and how they NOT get in their schools...

I don't like chancing threads, because they sometimes discourage/make students extremely confident, but could you please chance me?

I am international student.

I spent last school year in the us as an exchange student (I think it's a plus, it's like adaptation to the culture, and stuff?), but didn't quite take the most rigorous curriculum, as I firstly didn't know what's AP and Honors, and it was almost impossible to switch classes later (I ended up having 1 honors and 1 AP class).

Volunteering with church in the US, tutoring both here and there in math, participating in math competitions (some team awards), playing soccer, tennis, participating in debate competitions in Az. Working as a translator and teacher assistant. I had a bad 9th grade, but my 10th and 11th grade marks are good (A's in 11th grade, 80% A's and some B's in 10th grade). I don't know however, if my grades play any role, as our schools don't have and IB or A levels etc, and education isn't really the best... + my school doesn't rank. I can also add that I am ambitious about improving my country (education and healthcare/welfare specifically), and plan to reflect it in my essay.

I plan to have following SAT scores (I took some of the tests, the 'planned' ones are based on the Practice Tests):

SAT I: 800/600-650/650-700
SAT II: Math 1: 740, Math 2: 800, Chemistry: 700, World History: 700
TOEFL: 100+ ish

Languages: English, Russian, Azeri - fluent. I also understand Turkish, since it's close to Azeri.

I still look at my info, and feel than I can not compete with the U.S. students, as I fall behind in EC and scores, I guess.

But still, do I have chances for top-20? Thanks in advance.

By the way, I plan to major in Mathematics

You are planning to have a 740 on MATH 1 and 800 on MATH 2 ???

I already got math 1 results, so it's 740. Math 1 is 'harder to get 800 in', because 1-2 or two mistakes - and it's already 780-790, while in Math 2 you can make up to 6-8 mistakes and still have 800. I made 5 mistakes on math 1, all careless, so I think I will work on consistency and be in a good shape for math 2.

Your multiculture experience and language skill make you very competitive. You don't have to compete with U.S students, because intl students and US students are not in ONE pool.

Thanks Hethune, that made me breathe a little bit easier :)

I guess it's too late to edit; I finished the school in 11 grade (my school year in the US was last), since we don't have 12 grades here, if that makes any difference. Now, this year besides preparing for SATs and stuff I work as teacher assistant and volunteer in tutoring kids who are applying to the US universities, too (in SAT math, sometimes in SAT English, too). I hope that's considered a decent way to spend a non-school year

Anyone else?

here, I'll bump your thread, but my life is a lot easier now that I know I'm not in the same pool with US students... phew!

Yes, that's great... It's scary to see perfect score people getting rejected everywhere :P

would you chance me?

Sure :) 10char

Hey ! Can I make a comment?
I think that you are doing really well with your SAT scores.
Did you study in English-Program school or international school?
If not,you SAT scores are really high--> college will understand that non-native speaker's score can not compare to native speacker's score.

Most of Thai student ( non English-Program) scored about 500 in SAT reading and still enrolled in Top universities such as HMC, MIT,Cornell,CMU,JHU,Columbia....

The only problem is your ECs,I guess.
Did you participated in any national or international competition?

Anyway, a good college essay will make you stand out..

PS,I'm applying this year too.

Hi! Thanks for the reply! No, I didn't study in English - language school, I didn't even have it in my school as a subject (I studied it by myself/with a teacher).

Nah, I didn't get a chance to participate world wide :P I don't have many EC's, but I am deep involved with them: I am really good in soccer, played debates for about 4 years and won some titles here, do pretty good in tutoring e.t.c.

I think another problem is that in my country we don't have all those clubs and organisations :( Or we do, but very small amount. Anything besides studying isn't really developed... Our soccer teams, for example, aren't even supported by school, when we play school vs. school we don't have a coach or special soccer kit :))
