My parents and I immigrated to the US from Eritrea when I was about 1 1/2 years old. The only problem is that I recently (as in about a year) found out that I'm not a legal US resident. Apparently, my parents and I overstayed our diplomatic visas when I was younger, and I found out when I was trying to get docs for a learner's permit.

I've lived here all my life and I definitely plan on going to college this year. Is this going to kill me in the admissions process?

Here are my stats:
SAT: 740 CR 730 M 780 W
AP: World Hist - 5, Psych - 5, US History - 5, Eng Lit - 4
Pending/Current (all Aps): Calc, Spanish, Environmental Science, American Gov, English
GPA: 4.19 W 3.97 UW
Rank: Top 2% 14/600

I have a good list of ECs (with leadership positions) and awards, but I won't go into detail (privacy).

These are schools I'm looking at:
U of Chicago
William and Mary
Dartmouth
Amherst
Bryn Mawr
Virginia Tech
Cornell
Oberlin
Drexel
Hofstra

bump any advice?? Ill chance back…

Are you a senior or a junior? You might want to do some research about how your college choices handle undocumented students. I’m pretty sure they won’t turn you away, but for public schools it might be tricky w/ in sate and out of state tuition. Does your guidance know? She/He might have a lot of good advice. I’m sure you can also find other info online if you search around.

U of Chicago: high match
William and Mary: match
Dartmouth: high match/low reach
Amherst: match
Bryn Mawr: match
Virginia Tech: safety
Cornell: high match/low reach
Oberlin: match
Drexel: safety
Hofstra: safety

Good luck!

Thanks! and I’m a senior. I chose most of those schools based on their aid to internationals (which is what I’m considered about half the time) or on their policies toward students like me. Obviously, my parents are not in strong economic standing, and Amherst and Dartmouth are need blind to internationals. All of the others besides W&M, Drexel and Hofstra meet 100% of aid if I’m accepted, but of course it’s like a 5% chance and I contacted W&M and they said I could still be instate, so that’s a HUGE relief. (UVA and VTech say I’m OOS though). It’s just frustrating because my best bet is a private school like Chicago or Amherst, which is not a reasonable place to put your hopes :(

Bump any help is greatly appreciated.
