Chance an international!

SAT scores:
November 2010 - M: 690 CR: 520 W:510 Total: 1720
October 2011 - M: 770 CR: 570 W 570 Total: 1910
December 2011 - M790 CR: 610 W: 600 Total: 2000

It is not the best scores, but I study English as a second language and I am rather happy about these scores. 2000 sounds better than 1990, so I was perhaps a bit lucky!

TOEFL: 109/120 (Writing: 27(/30), Reading: 27, Speaking: 27 and Listening: 28)

+
I have gotten all A's since I got my first grade ever, which I count as my best part of my application.

Teacher recommendations are great! (the teachers always appreciate my enthusiasm and my ability to ask good questions in class)

I help out a lot in my family company as well as home, which makes it hard for me to find time for other extra curricular activities.

Played saxophone since third grade and this summer I played at a music festival where Robyn and other famous Swedish artists performed. I wrote this adventure in my common app essay.

I'm Swedish ;) Apparently, our work ethic is much appreciated in the U.S.

-
My essays are probably not the best, but I don't think I will be rejected by the schools because of them.

List of colleges I have applied to:
Colgate University
Dartmouth College
Middlebury College
Vassar College
Amherst College
Colorado College

Keep in mind that most colleges strive to become more diverse, and since we are not many Swedes who apply to college in the U.S, the chances for our acceptance at some schools multiply. There are 3 test centers for the SAT in Sweden and perhaps 40-50 students at most take the SAT each month. Of those students, at least half of them are recruited athletes. In Sweden all we have to do to apply to universities is to send in our grades from high school. Therefore, many students also take the test without following through with all of the applications because they don't think it's worth the exertion. A handful of people may apply to Dartmouth, Middlebury and Amherst, but probably no one will apply to the other schools on my list.

Now, what are my chances in your opinion from what information I have given you? Please motivate your answer! :D

Thanks.

Great chance at Vassar, Colgate, and Colorado! Not so sure how well you will hold up in a more competitive app pool considering your SAT scores, but you look fairly well qualified! Good luck!

SAT twins! My friend goes to Vassar and loves it. She gets similar grades to you and she got a 2060 on her SAT so I’d say you have a great chance there as well as colgate, amherst, and colorado. Dartmouth is iffy for anyone cause its an ivy so its hard to predict but being from Sweden does give you an advantage. Best of luck!

Thanks! I think all of these colleges are great, and if I will be accepted at just one of them, I would be very pleased :)

i’d say pretty good, and they’ll probably cut you some slack for being international

thanks! I really hope so!

I’m an international and many of my classmates are also applying to the same schools as you. I think Colgate and Colorado College are more likely to admit you. It’s going to be very difficult for Amherst and Dartmouth.

I think you have a great chance at Colorado, Colgate, and Vassar. You’re going to have more trouble at Dartmouth and Amherst. Your math score is fantastic though, which should really help you when you take into consideration that you’re an international student.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1269407-chances-princeton-harvard-brown-more.html

You definitely have good chances at all of them as your math score is high. However, didn’t you do the SAT subject test at least in Math (II preferably). If they aren’t required, the are definitely a plus (if the score is good obviously) to evaluate you to the “American standards”.

A 520CR will make all of these schools tough. Yes, they want diversity, but they need to know you can succeed among their student population. As others have said, Dartmouth and Amherst are too far out of reach. Midd and Vassar also seem unlikely.

Assuming you’re full pay, maybe Colorado College.

Remember, all any school needs in one Swede every four years to include Sweden on their country list.

Waverly, you did not read closely enough (I wonder what your CR score was…). I got 610 in CR on the last test. 2000 in total. Not 1720, which I received over a year ago. My TOEFL score is better or almost the same as the average score of admitted international students at these schools. I think I can manage.

No, I forgot to mention that I will be applying for financial aid. I know, this could make it rather difficult for me to be accepted, but we will see about that as time comes.

I did not know that last thing you said. Thanks for the heads up!

Applefan123, I will do the subject tests in physics and math II in a few weeks, and hopefully they will have time to see those scores before it’s too late.

bump! bump!

Bump10char

I would say you’re golden with all of them except Amherst and Dartmouth, and you still have a pretty good shot for those, Especially since you’re international. I wouldn’t worry

Thanks for chancing me! But you do know that the acceptance rate for international students is worse compared to the acceptance rate of Americans. Did you read my post about needing financial aid when you wrote a response?

I came back here to post something I forgot to say the other day.

I have heard of someone from Sweden who was admitted to Yale, Brown, Princeton and Columbia. Her SATI was 2400 and SATII was 800/800/800/750. She did the IB too.

I think what stood out were her essays. Hope you did those well!

Depends on which universities. For the universities that have Need Blind admissions (where finance is not considered during admissions cycle), International admissions may be especially impacted as there is often a quota for how many international admits they can admit. I think Dartmouth has a Need Blind status to admissions.

Otherwise, being an international usually has little impact on your application. However, being international can help in many Public Schools and schools which are short on money and need more internationals to help leverage their funds.

@082349, I don’t study IB… I study English as a second language at a regular high school in Stockholm (my high school happens to be the toughest high school to be accepted to since you need straight A’s to get in). My SAT scores still say that I am more proficient in English than 82% of the students who did the SAT last year in the U.S., which I think is pretty good since it’s my second language. Would have done much better if the test was in Swedish  I heard of two students getting into Princeton and Harvard last year from Sweden with the SAT scores of 2020 and 2080 and they were not recruited athletes. One of them had been to Africa and “helping the poor” whatever that includes I don’t know and the other was school president.

deathblade127, I don’t meen to be disrespectful, but you are wrong about some things. I have researched this for over a year now and my conclusion is that so called international students can’t be described as one group of applicants. Every school looks at each country as a pool of applicants. Most universities and colleges want to have as many countries represented in their student body, which is why students from countries like India and China have a tougher time than students from countries like Sweden. They don’t have to accept students from all these countries because sometimes the applicants do not meet their standards. I hope and believe that I do meet their standards.

Amherst and Dartmouth are both need-blind for international students. The others are not, which can make my admission into these schools a rather arduous task because I need as much fin aid as I can get.

Bump. Please read my extra posts to really understand my application as a whole. Thanks! Will chance back ;)
