Chance an international?

Hi all! I am a student from Singapore. I hope to get into UIUC engineering (very selective right?), one of my favourite universities. UIUC is such a great place to be at! Not sure whether I can get in though. Pls advise!

First try:
M: 720 (careless!)
CR: 660
W: 650 -_-

ECs: Have won several research awards (such as silver for Singapore Science and Engineering Fair and finalist for A*Star Talent Search 2008). Presented project at several international conferences. One of the top 10% in my school. Was previously the national champion for my age group in table tennis as well. Captain of table tennis team, community leader (100+ hours) as well etc. Will get good recommendations from my teachers, will write a decent essay.

Btw, does uiuc require SAT II for international applicants? Also, is my SAT score too low for an international apply to engineering, or just right? Is there also early action, or rolling admissions for uiuc? Hope any kind person out there can answer my questions! Thanks everyone!

I think your SAT score is fine. I know tons of internationals who got into the engineering school with a lower score. If you think you can raise your Cr and W score, try taking it again to be on the safer side.

You ECs are amazing and will definately help you out

If you want do engineering, I STRONGLY suggest you SAT2 in Math/Physics/Chemistry. Nothing displays your ability to handle hard sciences better than the SAT2. You seem like a smart person and im sure you'll well in those.

Overall, I think your a great candidate and I highly doubt that they would reject you.

Definitely in :)

yeah.

And answering one of the questions I left out, NO uiuc does not have rolling or early admssions.
They have early notification dates which is not early action/decision.

aj16:

Doesn't UIUC disregard SAT II scores? As in, even if you submit them, they wont even look at them.

No they have a full file review, at least for the College of Engineering and the College of Business.

Ofcourse, its not required, but if you submit them they would consider it.

kwaldner... of course in. -_- unless you write a very bad essay. come on!! anw you really should take SAT II. it would be useful for other colleges you're applying to even if UIUC doesn't require it.

UIUC does not use SAT IIs at all for admission. They will not consider them even if submitted. That includes the engineering and business college. Also, recommendations are neither required nor considered for admission.

Key factors for admission are class rank (or UIUC's estimate of it if school does not rank) and test score. SAT puts you in the middle 50% range for engineering. You seem to say you are in top 10% of your class, which would also put you in middle 50%, but cannot tell that is what you are actually referring to in the third sentence of your paragraph that begins with "EC's."ECs will help you. If in top 10% and with the 1380 SAT score for M and CR, you have a good chance but don't assume it is shoo-in.

UIUC has a form of early action. Those who apply and get everything in by a certain date, usually set as sometime between November 10 and 15, will receive one of three decisions in mid-December: admitted, denied, or deferred until after all applications are in. The second decision date for all remaining applicants (including any deferreds) is usually about mid February or somewhat thereafter.

100% in; your accomplishments are great! just don't slack off next year lol.

Redo SAT, you should easily be able to reach 750+ in math and 700+ in CR/Writing (considering you're top 10% of your class and that singapore is a highly competetive nation to go to high school).
Definately do the SAT II next fall, you'll need them to apply for more selective unis (I'd advise you to apply for FinAid at a couple as well, you never know if you might hit the jackpot ;)).

aj16:

this is straight from the uiuc website (U of I Admissions: International Freshman FAQ):

"Do you require the completion of ACT or SAT I? What about the SAT II?

* Yes, it is now required for all freshmen applicants. The University does not use the SAT II scores for admission."

Definitely take SAT II's if you are thinking off applying to other universities. But in the off chance that you already are dead set on going to UIUC, then I suggest not to waste time and money on taking the SAT II's.

Thanks everyone for your comments! Hmm, yes i will definitely improve the sat score to >2250 to be really sure of getting in. I heard uiuc's civil engineering is the top in US! I do hope to get into that course!

drusba: well the top 10% refers to the estimated school rank (out of 1200+ students). It has nothing to do with the ECs haha. Just accidentally misplaced it there. Anyway my school (highly competitive!) does not rank its students though.

^kwaldner... I got into UIUC's Civil Eng. Hahaha, yeah, hello, your senior here again.. :P And yes it's #1 in the US. :D
