Chance an intl student

Hi, everyone, greetings from brazil.

I´m really anxious about my applications results and would appreciate if you could chance me.

I’ve applied for the following colleges:

Colgate
Carleton
UChicago
Dartmouth
University of Rochester
Notre Dame
NYU

ACT: 31 composite
TOEFL IBT: 102
GPA: Don’t really know. Schools in Brazil report scores in a 0-10 scale. My scores’ mean would be around 9.
Extracurricular activities:

-Varsity Futsal: Grades 10 11 12. Competed in the Brazilian High school league. One of the most challenging futsal leagues in the world.

  • Model UN: Grades 9 10 11 12. Won several best delegate awards.
  • Research: Grade 11. Produced an award-winning paper about UN’s interference during Congo’s Civil war.
  • Student Govt: Grades 10 11 12
  • Brazilian Astronomy Olympics: Every year Brazil hosts a contest that tests south american students on their knowledge and skills in astronomy. Grades: 10 11 12. During the 11th grade I won a silver medal, whhich is considered an international award.
  • Studied French and Spanish as Foreign languages during 2 years.
  • Rodas da Pas (Wheels of Peace) NGO: I´ve been part of this NGO for 2 years. It’s a group that donates bycicles for poor kids and promotes events to make the use of bikes more popular around Brazil.
  • O Dragão na Minha garagem (The Dragon in my garage): I´m an editor for this facebook page. Today we have over 70k likes. We write texts about science, philosophy and literature.
    -Theater Club: Grade 10.
  • Peer Counseling: Grades 10 11 12.

FINANCIAL AID: YES

I’m pretty sure I have excellent essays and recomendations.

Also, I don´t come from a wealthy family, and a good education in Brazil is really expensive. Fortunately, I’ve manged to get a scholarship in one of the best schools in the country.

Knowing your GPA is extremely important. It’s hard to chance you without knowing your exact GPA. If I were to use raw American Scales, a 9/10 is a 90/100 which is a 3.6/4. That GPA is below the average of the universities you listed. UChicago has an average SAT of 4.23 (which is insane), and U of Rochester has an average of 3.8. Check how your school lists your GPA so that you’ll have a clearer picture of where you rank.

Your ACT is a little below the averages of your universities as well. Most of them have a 32, 33 average.

Your ECs are pretty impressive, so that lifts you up the ranks a little bit. Kudos!

The fact that you’re applying for financial aid makes things a little difficult, but that’s how I would round things up:

Colgate (Possibly)
Carleton (Fit)
UChicago (Reach)
Dartmouth (Reach)
University of Rochester (Possibly)
Notre Dame (Low reach)
NYU (Possibly)

(These are subject to change if you get a clear picture of your GPA)

Good luck!

Thank you! When it comes to my GPA, my school made things really difficult for students to get a high GPA. Do you think colleges could take this into account? Note that I was 1st in my class rank.

@Motta900 if you have your class rank in your transcript, then the AO will see that you’re the best there. Also, don’t just mathematically transform the /10 mean into a GPA out of 4.

@Theoddorre Thanks for your reply!
