Chance an OOS Applicant

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could chance me as I have literally no idea whether or not UNC is a school I can get into. I applied EA!

Our OOS high school usually has a couple of students admitted each year to UNC-CH; and, with the exception of legacy students, our admitted students have SAT scores of 1350+, ACT scores of 34+, and weighted GPAs of 4.5+ on a 5.0 scale. Other kids in our city who I know were admitted to UNC-CH recently have also had similar statistics; and all of these kids were “unhooked” in admissions parlance (i.e., not a recruited D-1 athlete, or URM, first-generation college student, etc.).

If you look at the UNC-CH common data set, under Part C7 it states that standardized test scores, application essay, letter(s) of recommendation, and rigor of your high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas GPA and class rank are “important” academic factors considered for freshman admission. Extracurricular activities, talent, and character/personal qualities are considered as “very important” non-academic factors.

Based on your objective criteria, I think that you are competitive for admission. If you have good essays and letters of recommendation, that will help a good deal. Your ECs showing leadership ability also should help.

As you may know, admission of OOS students is very competitive; and UNC admits OOS applicants in numbers that are calculated not to exceed 18% of an entering freshman class. See “Undergraduate Admissions” on Page 2, here: http://www.admissions.unc.edu/files/2013/09/Admissions__Policy.pdf.

If your high school has Naviance or a similar program, you might look at the objective data for other students from your high school who have applied to UNC-CH, and how you compare with them. Your guidance counselors should also have some insight into your chances.

I’ll echo @gandalf78 and just amplify one point - your stats make you competitive - garnering an acceptance will come down to crushing your application (especially the essays) and a bit of luck. With a cap of 18% on OOS admissions, a lot of very competitive applicants are unfortunately turned away.

I am out of state from Wisconsin

  • ACT 33
  • 11 AP Classes (3’s and 4’s)
  • 3.9 GPA
  • Founder and President of a Club
  • Good EC’s and volunteering
  • Grandpa and both parents attended UNC
  • I have already been awarded an NROTC scholarship to UNC however this does not ensure admission

Let me know if there’s anything else that will factor in to admission and what you think my chances are. I applied early-action if that makes a difference

@AMK467: The UNC-CH Admissions Police here, http://www.admissions.unc.edu/files/2013/09/Admissions__Policy.pdf, provides on Page 1 at Paragraph III, the following language that is relevant to you: “In the application of this policy of competitive admissions to nonresident students, preference for admission may be given to nonresident applicants who are children of alumni of the institution.” So the fact that your parents are UNC-CH alums should help you, as an OOS legacy, in your admissions; especially if you are otherwise on the bubble – as I think you are (or even slightly below it) – with a 33 ACT. (And I am presuming that your 3.9 GPA is unweighted?) Hopefully, your essays are good since that is an important factor in the admissions decision.

Looks good. I’m in kenan-flagler OOS and my SAT wasn’t as high as yours.
