Chance an OOS for UF?

I'm a half indian male who attends a fairly competitive public high school in the mountain west. I'll be a senior in the fall.

GPA: UW-3.92, weighted- most likely a 4.3-4.4 with Honors/AP classes.
Rank: 23/471 (Top 5%)
ACT: 32 (35 Math & Science) Hopefully improve in June
6 Honors Classes by Graduation
Junior AP Classes: Bio & Lang- Most likely 4's/5's

Senior Schedule:
AP US Gov
AP Econ
AP Calc BC
AP Physics B
AP Lit
Spanish IV

Extracurric: 4 years Tennis Team (Hopefully Varsity captain next year)
4 years Jazz Band I (Lead Gutar)
3 years in a Community Service club. (Master Secretary for 1 year)
Attended Leadership camp on medicine/healthcare for 10 days
Part of a club that helps freshmen adjust to the new highschool environment.
1 year Student Gov.
100+ hours Hospital Volunteering
National Honor Society Member
Pit Orchestra Member for Musical (2 Years)

Hooks: Father attended UF for both undergraduate and MD school. Grandfather taught at UF for 20+ years. - How much weight will this have in the admissions process? I know UF is extremely competitive OOS.

You have quite nice chances of getting in. The alumni plus the teaching relationship should give you an edge should you need it. What other AP classes have you taken? They are pretty helpful for when you’re applying, your GPA could use a slight boost (I hope the end of semester half credits for your current AP’s should move that up). Your ACT score seems respectable, though just in case I would cram this summer to retake it first chance in the fall. (Do NOT procrastinate testing, I know a few seniors at my school that regret that very very much).

If I were you, I’d just try to boost that GPA a little or take another AP senior class (Gov and Econ are half year courses mostly, so I think you’re only taking 5). But you look like you’re in good shape.

I don’t know how much OOS differs from in state. That said, boost the ACT and write some good application essays and you’d be pretty set for the honors college. As you are now, i think you’re definitely set for regular admission unless you royally screw up the essay. This is for in-state, again, not sure how much it differs.

My stats are very similar to yours and I was accepted last year as an OOS student. You also have a great senior year course load. I think you should be fine!

I think some people can get overly critical on here. I actually think you have a very good chance just as you are. Good luck

I personally think you need to work on more community service/volunteer hours. UF is looking for a well rounded person, not just a great test taker. Really work on a great essay and volunteering some more and I think you have it made!

A 32 on the ACT is an excellent score. I dont why someone posted that you needed to increase your score I disagree with that statment.

Pack your bags you will be a Gator.

I would also suggest that bump up the service hours. I know students that had over 300 hours.

Quick Question: Why does the UF Honors Program invite applicants with an ACT of 33 or above but only an SAT of 2070 or above? A 33 on the ACT is equivalent to almost a 2200…

Great question! I called admissions to ask the same question–I also called UF Honors. Neither provided an answer-“that’s what is was last year”. IMO-considering the # of admitted OOS applicants for the past several years <2%, unless an OOS applicant has a very special talent, their “bar” should be the same as honors with regards to admissions.
