Chance an OOS

LOL, we all were, in one way or another back in those “heady” days.

mhc48, Miami’s website today lists the 2010 / 2011 OOS tuition as $37,254.00 including room and board. Then it lists a little over $2000 in “additional estimated expenses”. I know that those could be a little more or a little less. That comes in at $39,000+.
I know that UM’s OOS tuition is more (my son attends there, thanfully, in-state), but I feel there is an added value to Michigan’s reputation being known world -wide. I am familiar with Miami because I grew up in Cincinnati. I only live one state away now, and many people here are not familiar with Miami at all.
Don’t get me wrong - I think Miami is a great school. I just don’t think my daughter has done her part (worked hard enough) for me to justify paying that much tuition.

My mistake on saying "over $40,000)

I’d disregard the $2k additional costs. In my experience, the Additional Fees are the same for any school. Except of course travel if you live on the West Coast and send your child to a New England School (like my sister) or vice versa. Health insurance shouldn’t be necessary if your child is covered under your own plan (now under Obamacare til age 26); text books cost pretty much the same anywhere (this past semester my son rented his books at a big savings). Incidentals are dependent on you and your child and what they are used to.

Do you not expect to be eligible for some financial aid?

I’m an OOS applicant as well, and I just submitted my ED application earlier today. Would anyone be so kind to give me an estimate of my chances?

3.6 GPA (UN)
29 ACT
1210 SAT
Currently enrolled in 3 IBs and 2 APs, and I scored a 4 on my AP USHist exam last year
Play varsity hockey, in 3 honor societies; Music, National and German
Eagle Scout

I’m working on getting my GPA up to a 3.7 so I can be eligible for some merit scholarships. So, CC, do you believe that I will get in?

the above statistics are actually for University of Miami which is wonderful because they came as a shock since I was sure my D had at least a better shot than 5%! phew!

bobbybobcat^Get that ACT up one more point as well and you’ll get more $$. Consider applying for Honors as well. There are some nice benefits. They have written in their newsletters that they are looking for a smaller yield next year, but you should not have any problem getting in. They also are looking to boost OOS student numbers for the future, just as many other state schools are planning on doing.

My daughter is an OOS senior at MUOhio. She had a 28 ACT, 3.4 or so unw gpa. Lots of AP classes and good ECs (varsity sports, editor of yearbook and national chemistry award winner). Miami gave her $4000/year in merit aid.

Currently the MUOhio web page says this about OOS merit aid.
[University Merit Scholarships](Costs, Scholarships, and Financial Aid | Miami University)

Out-of-State Students

Out-of-state residents admitted as new first-year, full-time Oxford campus students will be awarded the following scholarship amounts based on both of the following test and GPA criteria:
ACT Composite GPA (4.0 scale) Award**
30 or higher (or 1330 or higher SAT CR+M) 3.70 or above* $40,000 ($10,000 per year)
28 or 29 (or 1250–1320 SAT CR+M) 3.70 or above* $28,000 ($ 7,000 per year)
26 or 27 (or 1170–1240 SAT CR+M) 3.70 or above* $18,000 ($ 4,500 per year)

Hello, MU forum.

I’m using Miami as a safety. I honestly really like the school, but if possible I’d like to go to a more prestigious college. Just to make sure, I’m not underestimating this place, am I? Could you guys give me some odds based on my stats?

In-state
Male
3.0 GPA
Top 35% of class
34 ACT
Senior year I’m taking Calculus, Government, Spanish IV, Human Anatomy, Acc. English 12 (kinda like AP class without an AP certified teacher)

So, yeah, my GPA sucks, and I don’t know how MU weights different aspects of an application. How am I looking?

I spoke to a Miami rep at a college fair here in NJ and it seemed like they were full-court pressing for OOS East Coast applicants. I went to school in Ohio and my sister is a Miami grad (originally from western NY) Ours is a big Public school 2000 kids (500 seniors) and VERY few apply to Midwestern schools save for Michigan,Wisconsin, Indiana (recently hot) and as far as Ohio schools it’s pretty much only Kenyon. The schools Naviance tracking shows 19 applications over the past 9 years with only one denied admission (scattergram shows it as a 900ish SAT) Two students have chosen to attend Miami O. I think your chances are HIGHER coming from certain areas of the country and they want that geographic diversity!

Decisions for students who applied Early Decision, like myself, went online at midnight tonight and of course I stayed up anxiously refreshing and turns out I got accepted! One the happiest nights of my life; I don’t think I’ve stopped smiling yet! Good luck to all others and thanks to those on here who relieved a bit of my worrying!

Congratulations bobbybobcat. Any merit money to sweeten it even more?

Congrats Bobbybobcat! Did you also apply for Honors?

Hey everyone, just some informatioon but I applied EA to Miami with a 3.3 1250 (SAT) and 29 (ACT). I’m from the east coast and I have many friends that go there. From what I heard… unless your applying straight to the business school… its not TOO hard to get in. My friends both had 3.3s (highest) and low SAT and ACT scores. They didnt have any help getting in (legacies, ect.) but are still bright students. So anyone who is writing in here worrying about getting in with lower test scores, stop stressing, its an even chance for EVERYONE

I haven’t gotten my packet yet, decisions were posted online last night, but I don’t think financial aid info comes out until February so I still have time to get my GPA up to better my odds. I didn’t apply for honors, either. I’m just stoked to have gotten accepted! Ever since I went on a visit in June I was in love. I’m happy to say that I’m a class of 2015 Redhawk!

My D was also accepted ED and we’re just thrilled! But notification of scholarship money won’t come out until RD notifications come out to give everyone an even chance. Still, I’m ecstatic for my D, our family’s first Redhawk!

My son is going crazy. Unable to apply ED because we are going to have some financial planning to do to make Miami affordable OOS…even with the automatic 10k scholarship he has qualified for. Applied for Honors. Accepted to Kelley School of Business as direct freshman admit, but has his heart set on MU Ohio. Several of his friends are already accepted which is making things doubly difficult. Congrats, you guys!
