Chance an optimistic senior, and I will chance you back!!!

Finishing up my apps right now. I feel I did fine in school, but I'm not confident, trying to be optimistic. Please help me feel a little better

GPA: 3.6 Weighted. I bombed Junior year which tanked my GPA (Senior year obviously not counted for)

Freshman Year: 3.7 W
Sophomore Year: 3.7 W
Junior Year: 3.2 W
Senior Year: 3.6 so far.

ACT w/ Writing: 30 cumulative
SAT IIs: 680 Biology (Freshman Year), 640 Math II, 790 US History (Junior)
APs: European History (4), US History (4), Language and Compostion (4), Physics (n/a), Government and Politics (n/a), Economics (n/a)

Didn't take SATs.

Primary Major: History
Secondary Major: English/Writing

Extracurricular:

Eagle Scout - Still in the middle of my project, but it will be done in time. And FYI, most kids who put Eagle Scout on their resumes don't actually have it yet.

Varsity Swim Team - Currently a captain (1 of 4) of the team. I also won Rookie of the Year as a Freshman and Most Improved as a Sophomore. I also hold the team attendance record for 4 years. (4 Varsity Letters) Note that I have had extensive conversations with the swim coach at Hamilton (my ED school)

Percussion - I have played Percussion for close to 6 year now. I am a beast set drummer and can play Concert Bass Drum as well. I also do some marching stuff. Also in the Wind Ensemble or "Upper Band".

Lifeguard - Work as a lifeguard at a local beach club. I am trained in CPR and have a lot of first aid knowledge from boy scouts and training as well.

Some last closing details:

Ethnicity: White
New York resident
I go to an extremely competitive public high school (Top 50 in the country according to US News and World Report).

Here are the schools that I am currently applying to:

Hamilton College (ED)
Boston College
College of the Holy Cross (Legacy school)
Colby College
Connecticut College
Gettysburg College
Lafayette College
Union College
One other safety (Not sure, thinking about St. Lawrence University (legacy as well) or Ursinus College)

These are other schools I have thought about but not sure if I want to apply to yet (heavily considering ** schools):
Colgate University**
Bates College**
Middlebury College (Big Reach)
Loyola University Maryland
Hobart and Smith Colleges
Trinity College (CT) (Because my mom wants me to)

I'm having a final meeting with my guidance counselor on Wednesday to 100% finalize my list. As one can see, I am only applying to smaller liberal arts institutions, no big schools (BC is pushing it but I really liked it). Any suggestions? Comments? Ideas?

Thanks in advance for help. Leave a link and I will gladly return the favor.

I’d say match for all those schools except maybe Boston College and Colgate those are high matches. Sucks that of all the years to bomb you bombed junior year- that’s the most important. If I were you I would have switched my ED from Boston to Hamilton, but I guess that’s too late now. Good luck though!

What is your unweighted GPA?

Match at all except Colgate and BC:) Try to raise that ACT score!!

chance me BACK PUH-LEASSSEE

@oohtobeagooner Yeah I know, real bad year to do it. I had some emotional stuff going on as well as I lost 50 pounds in a short span of time and that led to me getting sick as well as hurting my leg. So yeah not fun. My math teacher also almost failed me because she hated me for no reason. My ED is at Hamilton FYI.

@ArtsyGirl13 No idea but it’s not that good because a) I take basically all honors and AP with no real easy classes in my schedule and b) junior year was a complete disaster. I’d say 3.4-3.5 range if I had to guess

@RaySmith2 Thank you and I will gladly repay the favor.

Also will add that I wrote a killer essay and got great reqs, so I’ll add that to the main post in a bit.

Hamilton College (ED) - Match
Boston College - High match
College of the Holy Cross (Legacy school) - Match
Colby College - Match
Connecticut College - Match
Gettysburg College - Safety
Lafayette College - Match
Union College - Match
Colgate University - Low reach
Bates College - High match

Your test scores are fairly decent, and your EC’s are nothing super unique but still quite strong nonetheless. Your GPA may bring you down a little bit, but I think you have a great shot at many of those schools.

Hamilton College (ED) - Match (esp. with swimming)
Boston College - High Match / Low reach
College of the Holy Cross (Legacy school) - Match
Colby College - Match
Connecticut College - Match
Gettysburg College - Safety
Lafayette College - Match
Union College - Match
Colgate University - Reach
Bates College - Low Reach

Good shot at all of these schools. Nothing truly extraordinary or horrendous. You have nothing to worry about. Best of luck!

Chance me?

[Chance a Current Junior](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1423581-chance-current-junior-will-chance-back.html)

First of thanks for chancing me. Im not gonna put down each college and tell you whether its a match or reach. ill tell u how u would look to a app reader. Ur GPA is pretty low and i no u no that. ACT is right in the middle which means ur like the middle 50% of applicants so ur good. APs not bad and hope u do really well in physics b/c not taking ap cal will hurt u. SAT 2 are pretty low except USH. Take math lv 2 again along w/ lv 1 and see if u do better. take bio again as well. if u got a 680, then u definately have hope for atleast 730. Overall u have a decent chance at everything but Boston College. good luck.

yeah I meant I would have switched my ED from Hamilton to Boston

@goblin7224 To be fair, at my school, I’m still in the top 24th percentile of my class (though we have no ranks, our Guidance Counselors do tell us this). Most of the kids in front of me have taken half the number of APs with the exception of the top 10 percent. At one of the most competitive public high schools in the country, I’ll take it.

As for the AP Calc thing, I had a teacher last year who made me absolutely hate calc because she just hated our class and would cut lessons short to yell at us. Not totally blaming her though, because I’m not very good at Calc anyway, though I’m probably better at it then I think since I can manage in AP Physics.

Also, everyone who keeps telling me to retake my tests; is it worth at this stage of the game? I’ve already sent the majority of my Apps out outside of Colby and Gettysburg. I did take the ACT twice and got a worse score the second time around. Should I take that or my SAT IIs again? Answer back!

@oohtobeagooner Boston has no ED, only EA, and the only reason I didn’t do it because my essay wasn’t ready because of Hurricane Sandy. In any event, Hamilton is by far my NO. 1, so I wasn’t applying anywhere else ED.

I’m applying to Hamilton too!! It’s definitely one of my top choices. Also applying to Colgate and Bates. Your ACT could be just a tad bit higher, but I would say you have a very solid chance at Hamilton ED. Chance me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1422844-chance-me-williams-davidson-cornell-brown-etc.html</a></p>

@FusDORAH thank you very much. LIke your username btw, though I’m more of a Fallout guy.

Also, bump!

Bahaha video game on discussion on college confidential, you don’t see that every day! I just renewed my xbox live membership and black ops 2 is calling my name, hopefully I can focus on applications until I’m done, but after that xbox will OWN me lol.

I know next to nothing about those schools (sorry! :() but I’m just popping in to confirm that Fallout is (subjectively) cooler than Skyrim B|

@FusDORAH haha yeah finished my apps on Friday just doing safety schools now. Spent literally my whole weekend with Assassin’s Creed 3. Such a good game. Yeah, Xbox would consume my life right now if I wasn’t an athlete.

@intoaether I’ll agree, but I haven’t played a ton of Skyrim while Fallout 3 consumed my life last year for about two months. Definitely one of my favorite games ever tho.

In all seriousness tho, bump b/c I’d like my opinions.

Hamilton College (ED) - Super-Match (swimming)
Boston College - Reach*
College of the Holy Cross - Match
Colby College - Match
Connecticut College - Match
Gettysburg College - Below
Lafayette College - Match
Union College - Match
Colgate University - High Reach*
Bates College - Match
*These two schools specifically have told me that they really look poorly on a downward trend in grades, especially if it occurs in the junior year.

If I were you, I’d try to really incorporate something about your musical abilities in your applications (maybe even try to get interviews with band directors for the colleges you’re really interested in)-if you’re a really good, dedicated drummer in addition to being a fantastic swimmer, then you could possibly fill two “needs” at once!

Overall, I think your list is really good. Good luck!

I think that you have a decent shot of getting into a lot of your schools. You seem like a solid candidate for most of the schools you are looking at. Did something major happen your junior year that you could work to your advantage?

Hey I wish I could chance you but I honestly don’t know much about these schools :/. Best of luck!

@MsMallory I lost 50 pounds and my body got very sick for about two months or so. Not fun stuff. Not sure if that works or not. It also didn’t help that my math teacher tried to fail our entire class for not listening (I was trying to listen but most of class was spent reprimanding the rest of the class.

Anyone else?
