chance an out of stater?

Hi to all,

Background: I'm a junior at a top Illinois public school. I skipped the second and third grades but went back a grade for athletics when I transferred to a public middle school. My ADHD really affected my freshman and sophomore years as it went untreated, but with medication I've really been able to buckle down and get some really good work done.

Ethnicity: My mother's a second-generation Puerto Rican/Spaniard and my father's a complete mutt--Eastern European/Russian/Ashkenazi Jew, etc.

GPA: (W, since classes were all honors/AP)
Freshman--3.80/5.00 (My freshman year was completely mediocre--see above--with a 3.80/5.00 while in all honors classes. I think that was mostly due to the ADHD, an elongated acclimation period and my immaturity compared to my peers.)
Sophomore--4.05/5.00
Junior--4.90/5.00

Class Rank: 32/630

AP's: Junior--AP English Lang/Comp (5 on test), APUSH (5 on test)
Senior--AP English Lit, AP US Gov't, AP Comp Gov't, AP Psych, AP Physics C, AP Stats

EC's:
-two year class council member
-baseball soph/jun/sen (being recruited to play D1)
-club baseball every summer
-swimming frosh
-1st chair alto sax in wind symphony frosh/soph
-1st chair alto sax in jazz band frosh/soph/sen
-writer on school newspaper frosh/soph, production editor jun, co-ed-in-chief sen
-writer for the teen newspaper of the Chicago Tribune (very, very selective) jun/sen
-member of Tri-M music honors society
-Project Lead the Way pre-engineering courses frosh/soph/jun
-captain of/leading scorer for scholastic bowl frosh/soph/jun/sen
-volunteered for Habitat for last two summers
-internship at major engineering firm next summer
-eucharistic minister for Archdiocese of Chicago
-summer courses at Northwestern University

Standardized Tests:
AP Comp--36
SAT--2380 (800 CR, 800 W, 780 M)
PSAT--236 (National Merit Semi-Finalist)
Will take US History, Math II, and Physics SAT II's

Recommendations:
-Editor for my teen newspaper
-School psychologist/counselor
-Dean of students, whom I oddly enough know very well

Thanks, everybody!

GPA is low. Scores are good (make sure to take those SAT IIs)
Low on th APs
Ethnicity is a plus.
ECs are decent.

Make sure you get good subject test scores, and you probably can get in.

I think Eurazn is a little ‘harsh’ with you - but I admit that I am not an ‘UVA’-expert …

Having two sons who both also skipped a grade I know EXACTLY the problems your facing … I completely understand that you were somewhat ‘low’ in your grades in the first 2 years of HS - but you have a good trend!

Your SATs are ‘stellar’ - congrats! What puzzles me a bit (like Eurazn) is your relatively low GPA and your APs … ?? Somehow that doesn’t fit with your SAT score ??
(I see that you’re taking 6 APs this year - make sure you ‘kill’ them!)

Your ECs are good, I think, however, quite ‘erratically spread’ … (writing, music, church, sports, engineering), which confuses me a bit. I always thought that ‘less and more in depth’ makes a better impression than ‘many on the surface’ - but maybe I’m wrong and that’s just me.

I think one of the main factors of your application will be the essays - if you can pull it off there I think you’ll have a very good chance for acceptance. And, of course, you need to continue your positive trend in your GPA.

I think asmith has a better than decent chance at UVa. Relatively low marks 9th and 10th grade years are somewhat offset by his top 5% class ranking. Obviously standardized test scores are stellar. As to EC’s, while there is scatter, he has excelled at each one. Top schools seem to like well-rounded applicants, so I think the range of EC’s are a plus. A question for his guidance counsellor is how has his school done in the past placing kids at UVa.

actually, oddly enough, no one’s applied to UVa in like ten years. quite sad, really… everyone seems to head to illinois state. and what puzzles you about my gpa and ap’s? i had a mediocre freshman year, a slightly better sophomore year, and a really good junior year! and i’m lucky enough to have a great deal of interests… i should actually add that i just got named captain of our r.g. squad and was appointed to a treasurer-type position for italian club. somehow, i juggle these things. i have no idea how. hahaha

Your SAT score, coupled with your URM status (Hispanic – mother’s side), should give you an edge in admissions at several schools. Naturally, there are no guarantees, but I believe you have a solid chance at several top tier schools. Good luck!

You have a very good chance of getting into UVA. Yes, the element of LUCK plays a role in everything and getting admission is no exception!

haha you have the reverse problem of me. Your rank and GPA do not fit your phenomenal SAT score. Maybe your near perfect SAT will make up for your GPA department.
