My school is really competitive, but no one else got into RSI this year (like 3-5 applied), and no one else has the range of ECs that I do...

Do you guys think Im a match for MIT and Harvard since Im a girl + RSI? Looking at other threads, I really think I am.

Blah blah blah.

No one is a lock for MIT, particularly with their shift from “high qualified” to “highly qualified and interesting.” MIT, and all top schools, have plenty of highly qualified female applicants. You might want to work on your “interesting” quotient.

You’re an impressive candidate for most middle-grade engineering schools but, as the previous poster mentioned, you are in no way a “match” for MIT or Harvard. Your ECs aren’t as impressive as you make them sound, and I am in no way bashing you. Although you have done a fair amount in science and math, so have countless other people who apply to those schools every year. Also, your race will hold you back, especially when every other Indian is proficient in the same subject areas you are.

The best way I can sum up you problem is exactly what the first poster described: You need something that makes YOU unique. Having a “RSI, the top summer program in the world” isn’t necessarily going to accomplish that.

Fine, then atleast check out RSI 2005’s colleges that they were accepted too

HEre are the people

http://planetrickoid.comclub.org/people

Maybe Ill be rejected like those 2 from MIT but I think they were internationals and male…maybe times have changed. DOnt know thats why I was asking…wondering how its changed since 4 years ago.

The website addresses don’t seem to work for me…I’ll try them again later.

I am not saying you will get rejected from MIT or Harvard. I am simply advising you to incorporate something unique about yourself in your application. RSI is a wonderful program, and coupled with a unique aspect of your character, you are sure to get into at least one of those schools.

Don’t sweat it, you’re on the right track. Just remember to not rely on one EC too heavily.

Ok well I had to use the otehr ECs for the application for it…

Im going to enter in all those research competitions afterwords.

probably for MIT, but not for Harvard.

MIT LOVES AA + RSI

No offense, but how did you get into RSI with that attitude, seeing that you have no national awards?

^Totally agree, especially considering that she is Indian which doesn’t help one bit…

My daughter is at RSI with you this summer. I hope you represent an outlier in terms of arrogance and attitude.

MIT and Harvard are reaches for everyone. Yes, you are female and RSI which may help your application, but it does not make you a shoe-in.

You’re Asian, that automatically hurts you. And maybe i’m just dumb or whatever but I’ve never heard of RSI? 0.o Of course that doesnt mean anything. I’m just saying that the people who apply to MIT and Harvard are going to have just as impressive, if not more so, credentials than you. Your SAT score right now is solid but by no means amazing… your GPA is good, and your ECs seem alright, but again they dont jump out at me.
So keep working those ECs and definitely tone down for your essays. No one, and I mean NO ONE, is a shoo in for MIT/Harvard. Good luck with those SAT IIs tho … and not getting an 800 doesnt make you dumb. Just fyi.

So, if you’ve seen that link which supports the fact that RSI is a big hook, why even bothering to post this here? You have a good chance, which could be greater if your arrogance didn’t make my jaw drop. In case your still trembling from fear and agony of rejection, 41 RSI applicants applied to MIT in 2005 (according to your link), and 39 got accepted!

I hadn’t heard of RSI before posting on these boards, but it’s this summer research program at MIT that’s apparently extremely prestigious and highly difficult to enter; I’ve heard it’s more selective than admissions at top colleges. I’m a bit surprised the RSI admitted this applicant because of her presumptuous personality, relatively low/nonexistent test scores, and her lack of preexisting extraordinary ECs. Nevertheless, as an RSI participant, her chances at MIT are extremely high, particularly as a female applicant.

^Harvard, maybe you missed it but the applicant is doing RSI. That alone will get her into some top universities, although her attitude might keep her out.

Hmm…well I dont think she has no chance for Harvard and MIT. However, anyone would be arrogant to declare that those schools are matches unless 1. they are white/asian and cured cancer or 2. they are a native american with a 2100+ on the SAT. Those schools are reaches for you. However, I would not be amazed if you were accepted by either school. Apply to all the ivies and the like along with some safeties though!

i hope you get into Harvard :)

Why do you emphasize RSI so much? I mean, if your two word description of yourself is “RSI Qualifier” rather than “budding scientist” or “math lover”, etc. you might have some problems.

And your assumption of getting Intel semifinalist…the criteria for selection of this is more than just your research project. It’s also community involvement, promise as a scientist, etc.

Also, being a girl…I don’t think that’s a huge deal these days. Maybe twenty or thirty years ago… but I suppose it also depends on your specific field.

I must say, this whole post reeks of trollishness.

Overall…RSI alumni enjoy their great college acceptances not b/c they attended RSI, but rather b.c they were exceedingly qualified to begin with. If you think RSI is the best thing on your application, that might not bode so well.
