Chance an underachiever

What's up guys? I'm a High School Junior in an average Long Island Public School. I'm looking to major in sports journalism and minor in business, although that's not set in stone.

My (weighted and unweighted) GPA for my first three years is 80 (my school does GPA out of 100), with a slight upward trend Junior Year.

I've never taken an AP or Honors class, but I'll probably take 1 or 2 Senior year.

I have an 1800 superscore on the SAT (still working on improving, but for the sake of this thread lets assume it stays that way just so I can see where I stand.)

My school doesn't rank.

I have pretty good and unique ECS:

4-year member of stock market club (likely president or VP as senior)

High School MBA

Financial Literacy

Job

3-year member of DECA (business club)

Featured Columnist at bleacherreport.com for parts of 3 years (it's the third most visited sports website on the internet, I've had articles featured on sportsillustrated.com, cracked.com, brobile.com, seattlepi.com, the Houston Chronicle, the San Francisco Gate and many more. I've also had 3 articles top 75k reads, 12 more top 25k reads, 16 more top 10k reads. I've had my article as the featured article on the site's front page 88 times. I also covered the 2011 NFL Draft for the website.)

I expect to have pretty good teacher recommendations.

Here's where I'm thinking about applying, any reccomendations are also welcome (nothing too far though):

Syracuse
Temple
Maryland
Hofstra
Seton Hall
Pace
UCONN
Indiana-Bloomington
Michigan State
St. John's

bump .

bump .

Can anyone please weigh in here?

i only know about syracuse and uconn, but i think you have a good shot esp with those ECs. id also recommend BU and Northeastern

return the favor?

Really, I thought I was a reach at all four of those schools? BU looks awesome. And with your record I would think they’d have a hard time turning you down.

Can anybody else please weigh in here?

lol hi i hope this reply isn’t too late…but i honestly think you have a good chance at syracuse, temple, hofstra, seton hall, pace, and probably a few of the others!! your SAT score meets their requirements, but i’d suggest keeping your grades up and try improving on your SAT score if you can. but i honestly think you have a shot, especially cause of your EC’s :)

try checking out college p r o w l e r (they keep censoring me idk why ugh) if you havent already, they have their average SAT scores and such!! and be on the lookout for some more competitive colleges too, you never know

No you’re not late at all, thanks for responding. You really think I have a good shot with such a low GPA?

I’ll work on getting it up. And what more competitive schools do you think I might have a shot at?

What do you think you can get your GPA up to? That would make a huge difference in a lot of these schools

Not very much higher, I’ll finish Junior year with an 80.

After that I’ll only have 1 semester to get my grades up, and assuming I get a 90 average for that semester (as I did 2nd semester Junior year) I’ll probably be at only like 81 or 82, it’s tough to raise it that much after 3 years.

Also, I just made my schedule for next year and I decided not to take any APs, and my school offers limited honors classes for Seniors, so no honors either.

oh @nykidd…my b i didnt see your GPA
ummmmm well to be quite honest you’ll have to work your butt off to bring it up. your SAT score meets the requirement but your GPA really breaks the ice when applying to colleges
if you can show a gradual improvement in your grades colleges will note it. even if you can’t bring it up to a 90 or something like that, the improvement will show them that you realized your grades weren’t the best they could be and you worked hard to improve them!! they’ll see the effort and take that into consideration. don’t give up yet, every last minute truly counts

just keep in mind that not all hope is lost, you still have your EC’s and admissions essay and all that to bring to the table. just work hard for the next few months, do some stuff over the summer that’ll make you stand out (ex. research, college summer programs, volunteering, internships, etc. - make sure it relates to your desired major) so you can wow colleges.

and is there a reason why you’re not going to be taking APs? cause those could help too, and if your school weighs your averages it will bring up your GPA tremendously!

You probably will not be able to raise your GPA that high. Reach for all except Syracuse= high reach.

Syracuse = expensive!!!
