Chance an unsure junior? I'll be sure to hit you back.

I'm a junior and a VA resident that knows it's almost as hard to get into UVA, if you're a virginian, as it is for a person to get into Harvard. My freshman year sucked and I just don't know if I can get in.

Actually, you have it backwards. Admissions to UVA for non-Virginian students is comparable to Harvard admissions. Approx. 2/3 of UVA students come from the state of Virginia (mandated ratio set by the state).

I think as long as you keep your grades up you have an excellent shot.

Oh sweet jesus
see you next year

In 2008 Harvard had an 8% admit rate, with the interquartile range of SAT scores being 2080-2370. UVa had a 36.7% admit rate, which breaks down as 47% in state and 29.7% out of state. The interquartile range is 1830-2160. Here is the link for the UVa data:
[IAS Historical Data: First-Time First-Year Applicants by Residency](http://www.web.virginia.edu/IAAS/data_catalog/institutional/historical/admission/first_by_residency.htm).

I have no doubt that there are students who were admitted to Harvard and rejected by UVa, but we do a disservice to current and future applicants if we suggest that gaining admission to UVa and Harvard are of comparable difficulty.

Oh I was just making a comparison, I don’t have real stats or anything. With my GPA and stuff, it’s going to be tough, if not impossible, to gain admission into UVA, which is getting increasingly selective with each passing year. I did not mean, by any stretch of the imagination, that gaining admission into the University of Virginia is the same as Harvard, just a comparison based on my GPA. Don’t want any misconceptions:)

But the thing is, I think your GPA, Test Scores and Extracurricular activities make you VERY competitive for UVA. If you can maintain your GPA in your senior year and write good essays, I think you have a fantastic shot at gaining admission. UVA is becoming increasingly competitive, yes, but you are in-state and you do have a great record thusfar.

“Oh sweet jesus” <– My thought exactly. Now I feel like I have no shot.
