Chance Asian Kid in CS 2022

A couple more options for you to think about:

Utah Tech: You would get free tuition and the cost of room & board is well within your family’s budget. Located in St. George, it’s in a gorgeous area by various state and national parks, like Zion National Park.

U. of Miami: There are multiple full tuition scholarships here, more than at typical schools of this tier.

And in case you’re wondering why I’m bringing up Miami (or all those Texas schools in my previous post), in case you’re not aware, those are two spots where a lot of tech companies are moving to, as seen here: Tech flight: Why Silicon Valley is heading to Miami and Austin, Texas. Just note that the headline is a bit misleading, at least for the Texas part. They’re going to Dallas and Houston as well as Austin.

And run the Miami NPC as they meet full need.

Thanks a lot for this! I will probably use this.

What i am saying is that there can be leg up for people who would be trying for both merit scholarship and for financial aid. The chance of getting into colleges like Cornell is not easy especially with financial aid. The colleges want to make money and want the best qualified kids with full pay!

I am just cautioning you against applying to a bunch of colleges where your chance of getting in is not high. At the end, you do need admission into atleast one college and with full ride.

Yeah I get that. But I am probably going to get into WSU and all my tutition will be covered. I might apply to one more safety. After that, I am just going to shoot for high reaches. If I get in, Awesome! If I don’t, then I don’t. For CS, colleges don’t matter unless it’s for top colleges or maybe for PHD’s. But I definately will apply to a few targets too because I do want at least a decently strong CS school tho that provide full ride.

But presently, it doesn’t matter too much because I am looking into questbridge.

Yeah if you’re National Merit Semifinalist you get full ride

You keep saying you want a full ride but are not doing QB.

Shaking my head.

That is your best shot - there are 45 schools; 48 but three are women only.

Each is top notch.

You rank your top - 12 (or 15) I forgot - it’s like a lot of EDs and these schools are looking for diversity and taking kids with lesser stats then they would normal.

You’re not diverse (asian) at many of the schools - but you also are - at many of the schools.

Find, via common data set, the schools lacking Asian diversity - and give it a try.

I don’t think I am.

Re: that additional $15-$20K loans….you won’t be taking that alone. Either your parents will need to co-sign, or they will need to take the loan themselves. Are they on board with that?

Confused. Your parents have enough to fund $15k a year ? I thought they had lower income than that….

I don’t what you want me to say. That’s what they told me and I have no reason not to believe them.

If my parents have property overseas, but it’s currently disputed and it might be permanently gone. Also, a relative of mine does aid my family at times and claims me as a dependent on his tax forms. Will this impact me?

Do your parents claim you as a dependent or the relative on taxes ?

Is there income from the property ? If so is it reported on their tax return ?

Not my area of comfort but I assume that’s two important questions for the group.

When you did NPC for USC and Rice, did you include this as assets ?

The relative claims me as a dependent (not my parents).
We get no income from the property. And it’s not reported on their tax return.
I didn’t include the assets when doing the NPC.

This is a little confusing. How is it that someone beside your parents is claiming you as a tax dependent? It’s possible, but that is not typical…at all.

How much is this property abroad worth? When will it be liquidated? Even property owned abroad is supposed to be listed on the financial aid forms. Please make sure you do that if they still own this property when you file your FAFSA form…and the Profile.

Glad @kelsmom clarified that your parents can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

I’m assuming you plan to use your parents as your parents on the financial aid forms. Is that correct?

Are the people who claim you as a dependent your guardians, or are they doing so for some other reason?

Simply put….you are going to need very clear documentation of your financial situation. In my opinion, it’s highly likely you will be selected for verification. So make sure you have all the necessary info regarding your parent income, and whatever these folks declaring you as a dependent are contributing to your support.
