Chance at all?

I am a Canadian student who is in the International Baccalaureate program. I finished two of my IB exams, where I scored a 6 in SL French and a 5 in SL Math (math is by FAR my worst subject). Thus my converted marks are as following: French: 90-95, Math: 80-89. If all goes as planned, I should get a 6 or better on all my remaining courses, and 3 bonus points. (39/45). My core SAT score is a disappointing 1280, but I do intend to write my SAT Is one more time as well as my SAT IIs. I won't list my ECs and work experience yet, partly because the list is very long. Can someone chance me based on the stats I have provided? I really appreciate all the help! Thanks!

I think that 1280 is okay for Fordham. Being Canadian, as we discussed on another thread, I dont know if Fordham has a different standard for you or not. But generally, a 1280 SAT, with a gpa of 3.5 or better would be okay to get you in. These are very competitive times for US colleges and Fordham has seen a huge increase in applications the last 5 years, with a commensurate increase in SAT scores. You are likely in the middle of the pack, or 50th percentile, which should be okay. Of course, in college applications, anything can happen. So its imperative you write an outstanding essay and that you apply early. Fordham has non binding Early Admission, so there is no penalty to do so. Take advantage of that and get your answer before Christmas. Make sure to check deadlines as well. It wont get you merit scholarship money, it seems to me, since most people who earn scholarships are above 1400. That does not mean that you cant get other financial aid, but you also have to ask Admissions what their policies are on giving financial aid to Canadians.

Send them an email, that is courteous and well worded/constructed. Wait a few days for a response since its a busy time at Fordham these days and they get hundreds of emails every day. Or, you might call them and see what they say.

Good luck to you. Its a great school.

Thanks again for your help. If I am able to receive a core score of around 1400, are you suggesting that I may get substantial financial aid (whethere it is through scholarships or otherwise)? Furthermore, do you know an approximate day for when elligible students apply for early admission? Again, I really appreciate everything.

If you have a 1280 for only your math and reading parts than I would say thats a good SAT score… list what you got on all of your SAT parts and list what your overall gpa is, this way we are able to better see if you fit the average.

In Canada we don’t calculate GPA, but I’ve seen a few links on how to convert, and I’m going to make a safe assumption that it is between 3.7-3.9 (unweighted of course). One more question, do you think that my grades from the past three years will be significant to admissions officers? I took the pre-IB program, where the course work is the most demanding and rigorous, but there is no conversion. My GPA then was most likely around 3.5, but now since our marks get converted my GPA has significantly risen. Again, I really appreciate everything.

Your gpa is in the range, so you are fine there as well. I wouldnt fret. I think you are most likely in the admit pile of applications, but I dont work for Fordham, I am not an admissions officer, and nobody knows what next year’s pool of applicants will look like…but I think you will be fine.

Yes, being a 1400 or higher qualifies you generally for scholarships. Not a guarantee you get one, however.

Financial aid is not based on scores in the general sense either. However, if you are blessed with high scores, you can figure they are going to do what they can for you…presuming of course there is no bar to giving aid to you. Just off the top of my head, it seems you might not qualify for US federal student loans, but you would qualify for Fordham based grants in aid. I strongly suggest you CALL or EMAIL Fordham admissions/financial aid and inquire ahead of time.

Deadlines: Fall Semester Admission

Regular Decision: Deadline - January 15 // Notification Date - April 1

Spring Semester Admission
Regular Decision: Deadline - December 1 // Notification Date - Rolling after December 1

Go to Fordham.edu and browse the website. There is also an extensive Q & A on there to answer most of your questions.

Where are you in Canada? If in Toronto, Montreal you should venture down to Fordham THIS AUGUST for a visit, and while there, stop into the Admissions Office and talk to them.

Good luck.

I do live in Toronto and I am planning on going to NY and visiting a couple of schools. Now, I recognize a large mistake I made. There is only one test date available prior to the Early Action deadline. Considering this, the best idea is to probably take my SAT IIs, instead of my SAT Is (because I haven’t written my SAT IIs yet). I’m a little disappointed in myself because the 1880 I scored was with no preparation at all, and I know if I study well in advance I could obtain a 2000+ without a problem. This was definitely poor planning on my part.

I dont know about that. Call Fordham and see what they suggest. You can always take the SAT II’s in December. I dont think they are critical for most admissions decisions anyway. So call and ask. What Fordham wants to see is your SAT I scores, at least in the first instance. So call.

Regardless you are in the pool I think…though below a 1400 your scholarship chances are very slim.

Call the school. Sign up as they recommend, and then visit the school in August.

Dont stress it out, I truly believe you are in! Considering that you are in the IB program, a 3.7 is quite amazing and your SATs are a lil above average so dont worry you, are in. And if Fordham is your first choice, apply early action (its non-binding) and they will let you know of their decision by dec. Good Luck and dont fuss over it, im 90% sure you will get in!

…and the deadlines for early action applicants are listed online, I believe you should submit your application between oct-nov. Check online for an exact deadline date. Do not send your application on the same day as the deadline that would be a mistake on your part if you do, so send it sometime before the deadline that way its not lost in the mail.
