Wondering if my child have a chance at Berkeley (out of state) STATS: 35 ACT, Eagle Scout, 2 years IT internship, unweighted GPA 3.9 , 14 AP class ( 4 , 5 ) scores . Awarded AP Scholar Awards, swimmer, and different clubs. Got deferred from GaTech , MIT (EA) and rejected from CMU (ED)
Any hope? I am freaking out here.
It’s unknown, but don’t hold your breath on Berkeley either. Even if he gets in, it’s about $65k a year out of state. I hope you have some match and safety schools.
That is true.
Berkeley is one of the hardest schools to get into, especially for CS. I hope you applied to some good match schools for CS (Wisconsin, Northeastern, etc.) Applying as a CS major (I’m doing that to) is really hard because CS is one of the hardest major to get into. That’s why I applied to so many schools.
Good luck !
My son didn’t apply to many safeties (just one GSU, which he did yesterday) and looks like we will be screwed. Rejected from UIC CS and but still wait-listed from GTech, I hope he gets into anything now.
@tenseMom
from your posts it looks that GSU is safety that your child choose for CS. There is no way to transfer to CS with any transfer path unless your child is legacy and fall under Conditional Transfer umbrella (parent, grandparent, or sibling).
If your child is good at CS, my suggestion is to go through Kennesaw State University Engineering program and apply through Engineering path to Computer Engineering. (No opportunity to change major.) The only other option is taking GAP year and apply to different set of schools next year.
^^^ this is for GaTech transfer.
Even if he gets into Berkeley, the cost is too outlandish for it to be a rational option for a degree as ridiculously employable as CS. Sure, Silicon Valley has a lot of tech jobs. So does Atlanta. So does Dallas…and he can buy a house in those places. I can tell you as a programmer myself, that it makes zero difference where he graduates. In fact, after three years experience, employers won’t even ask where he went to school. It sounds like he’s really hung-up on prestige based on a lot of misconceptions. He could just as easily go to GSU and do just as well in his career as he could going to Berkeley or GA Tech.
Gap year and apply to more realistic schools, unless GSU is amenable.

I am also a programmer, I did CS from GSU 18 years ago and I know it doesn’t make any sense. But with all these amount of hard work he put and was worth less made me cry. He is not hung up on those schools, he wanted to get his end degree from GaTech like his cousin and I was the one who wanted him to apply on all those colleges. Wait listed on 3 colleges , Tech UC-UIC and UMICH. Lets hope.
