Chance At Cockrell Engineering

Hello, I am a junior in highschool who wants to major in Chemical Engineering at UT.

I love the area of the school (lived there all my life) and would really like to take advantage of the great program offered close to home.

Stats:
SAT:
700 M
650 CR
600 W
I have a 3.6 unweighted GPA and a 4.0 weighted GPA. I am in the top 9% of my class, and by my senior year will have completed 9 AP courses.

Extracurricular:
Four years school basketball
Two years of club basketball
Member of Ping Pong Club
One year of Debate
Two years of restraunt job experience

I've been nervous that my application does not pack enough punch to get into Cockrell and wanted to see what you guys think.

SHould be fine cause your instate

The proposed cut-off for auto-admits next year is top 9%. Of course, the doesn’t mean admit to Cockrell. Work on your SAT/ACT scores, especially math, and take any AP science and math classes you can get. If you are really aggressive, take a math class or two at a community college Good luck!

I am going to enroll in an SAT class this upcoming month and taking the test again in the spring.

My current AP class line up inlcudes:
AP Chemistry
AP Physics B
AP Calculus BC (next year)
AP Statistics (next year)
AP Environmental Science (next year)
AP Physics C (next year, also the class might get eliminated in which case I would take AP Biology)

I probably will say that you wont be admitted. Most ChemE’s are top 5%.

you probably won’t get into honors but you might have a chance…most chemE’s are higher up as far as rank goes. idk about the specific rank cut-off but for some E’s it’s as low as 2%. apply anyway and try your best to bring up your rank :]

Look for engineering clubs or competitions at your school, or engineering camps/summer programs. Check with local engineering firms to see if they would take an intern, even if unpaid, for a few weeks, in the summer. Engineering and business schools tend to be more holistic in their reviews than other programs, so your depth of interest may help offset your rank. If you are really aggressive, it will show. You may also make contacts that could write great rec’s for you.
