White Male, no financial aid needed, planning on ED. How do you think my chances stack up for the College of Engineering (specifically majoring in Computer Science?)

You have the same stats i had when i applied ED, if not better. I got in. So i say you have a good chance.

@Ace,

Just because you got in, it doesn’t mean anything for another person from another background. The only stats you can compare with him is your SAT scores which constitutes about 1/3 of your app. How much GPA matters / how well it shows on your app depends on what school you went to and what your ranking was. Also, stats are far from everything in an app. This kid is an international male applicant applying for COE, and you have to take that into account, even though he also applies ED.

With that said, send in your ACT scores. Your ECs may set you apart in the engineering school, but your grades aren’t the best. Applying as an international hurts you, but not requesting aid helps you. In the end, it depends on your school’s history of landing kids into Cornell. So far, looks like a low match to reach depending on what your school’s history is with Cornell.

I am not an International student (I’m not sure where you are getting that from), and what do you mean by grades? SAT and ACT? My school has around 300 per class and sends about 7-10 kids per year to Cornell (about half of those who apply)

Oh, sorry misread your post then. If that’s the case, then not applying for aid will not help you at all and the chances are still the same.

If that’s the case, then you should have a fair chance with Cornell. 50/50 then.

Ok thanks for your input. What do you think is my weakness? SAT and ACT scores?

Your ACT is fine - send that instead of SAT I.
Weakness, if any, is on grades.

Unhooked, but other than that a great chance. I feel like hooks are almost mandatory nowadays for HYPSM, but you can still get into Cornell/UPenn/maybe dartmouth without one.

Would you consider First place on the National Italian Exam to be a hook? That does sort of mean I am the best non-native Italian student in the nation…

Colene, I am an international student. And I just said that I got in and OP had similar stats. I didn’t say that OP will get in just because I got in.

Actually your SAT score is a little higher than your ACT score according to this:

[The ACT | ACT-SAT Concordance | ACT](The ACT Test for Students | ACT)

…in addition your 790 speaks well for COE. However male admit to COE is tough, but you have an average chance.

Your biggest weakness is probably a lack of math and science achievements. And class rank.

He’s international, but he also isn’t applying for financial aid, which is good.

I am aware that I am going for Engineering but do not have any achievements in that field. That’s because there aren’t too many Science/Math achievements to be won. There is the AMC but only the valedictorian ever wins that. I entered as many science competitions as I could (which was only 2 last year) with my Biochemistry-based project and unfortunately I did not win due to a variety of reasons beyond my control. As for the class rank, my highschool only releases top 10%. And I am not international!

IMO that aspect doesn’t really matter - your ECs set you apart and you are certainly very talented/passionate in the ECs that you chose to pursue.
