Chance at getting into BC?

Applied Early Action, probably going to get deferred because I don't think score report will get there in time.

I don't think my scores are at all impressive, but hopefully admissions will like something on here.

SAT scores: 650 math, 570 CR, 620 Writing
SAT II's: 630 Math IC, 560 USH
GPA: (Don't know on 4.0 scale, 92.68 unweighted)
AP's: USH (Got a 3 :/), Computer Science A and Calculus BC (Tests at end of this year)
Took precalc at WCC for credit, took Greek for 7 years for extra regents credit.

Essay: Talked about how taking Greek outside school has helped me connect with my culture and communicate with relatives and friends while visiting in Greece.
Recommendations: Guidance Counselor, Compsci/Math Teacher
Location: NY
High School: public, not very competitive
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Applied for Financial Aid.

Special Honors: National Honor Society, School Foreign Language Honor Society, mentioned in Who's Who Among American High School Students

Extracurricular Activities: School newspaper, math club, varsity bowling, varsity cross country, varsity track, helping hands club, drama club

Community Service by assisting teachers at my old Hellenic school, as well as some breast cancer and Alzheimer's walks.

Job as a busboy at local restaurant...

May not be much but it's all I got

Any input appreciated.

Sac, I think it is somewhat of a reach as BC has become so competitive to get into. Where else are you applying? Best of luck!

Thanks for responding, poi. Yeah, I applied there as my top reach school. Lehigh is also a bit of a reach for me. Here's my list:

BC
Lehigh
Fordham
Binghamton
Uconn

I can probably get into bing and uconn, and already into fordham.

Sac, congrats on Fordham! Its a great school. I know of numerous people who attend and EVERYONE loves it. Also, I think you have excellent chances at Bing and UConn. Best of luck!

I would say BC is a slight reach, mainly because of your test scores. Everything else looks fine to me, so best of luck.

Thanks for responding guys. I was talking to someone today who told me that BC, being a Jesuit University, stresses to look at the "Whole" person. I interpret this in a way, that maybe if they see something unique on my application, that they may be willing to overlook lower test scores. In this case, I think the essay and greek school classes will show how I am dedicated to my background and culture.

Do you guys think me theory may be right?

Please let me know.

Dear sac1129 : Normally, I do most of my chance-me responses on the BC thread itself, but wanted to offer some thoughts to help you now. Let's start with a look at the numbers. Last year's BC acceptance pool saw an SAT two-way midpoint of 1360. The bottom quartile was below 1280. This puts your 1220 into the category of needing to present truly outstanding qualifications elsewhere in order to push you over the top : essays, relevant volunteerism or something similar.

Your GPA on a 4.0 scale (about 3.7) is where many BC applicants stand and your AP curriculum load (three courses) is below the large number of applications at BC. Most applicants have a half-dozen or more AP courses to offer. If, as you state, your HS is non-competitive (which you should never admit!), then your GPA will be viewed with even a harsher eye. The special honors including honor societies are the starting point for many applications - not the ending point. Perhaps there might be a few awards here that you have overlooked?

Sports are present in track and cross-country although I did not see any music or arts interests included. Your extra curriculars are broad enough provided you have evidence of what you did as part of those groups.

Honestly, these credentials are just not a match for BC. There are other Boston options (including perhaps Northeastern) which might be in the running if you were considering locations as opposed to just the school.

Remember that BC is one of the "hot colleges" right now with the squeeze at the Ivy Leagues. 30,000 applications are expected this year for 2,250 places from about 6,000 acceptances.

Side note : Expect a "yes" from SUNY/Binghamton on your records presented here.

Thanks for the input, scottj

Alright here's the news.

They did get my full application in time. The news isn't totally bad, I was deferred. They specified in the message that Early Action admissions were reserved for the top applicants, and makes a more level playing field for RD applicants.

They also said to send in first semester grades to them...as well as any other honors we may receive. I think this can make or break me...Very good grades and some new recognition...or perhaps recent ones that I've overlooked?

I'm going to try my best. If my parents have time to get me down there, I would like to request an interview.

I'm going to give it my all to try to get in here.

But thanks for the input so far guys, the final news once again is I was deferred.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Good luck!

Guys, just an update:

Binghamton deferred me. Kind of confused as my friend who has an 87 gpa and a 1900 SAT...with less extracurricular's, got in over my 92.86 and 1840

Hopefully I have a better shot with regular decision.

Sac, thanks for updating. Sorry to hear the news, but I still think you have very good chances. Best of luck on Bing and your remaining schools.

I’m halfway through my junior year and haven’t taken the SATs yet. I’m waiting until June so I can hopefully improve as much as possible. My PSATs were: Math:49, Reading: 66, Writing: 62. So 1770/2400, 1150/1600. I plan on reaching the low 1300s at least. I’ll be taking the English, History, and Spanish subject tests.

I’m currently taking 2 AP classes, USH and English Comp, don’t know my scores yet. Next year I’ll be taking 3 AP classes and Spanish 5. Maybe it’s too early to tell if I can get in or not. I don’t have block scheduling, unfortunately, so I can’t take as many as other kids do.

I plan on majoring in either English or History, Pre-Law. My GPA of freshman/sophomore year is 3.82 (weighted), but I’ve most likely gotten it closer to 3.9 this year. I go to public school in a very small town in CT, moderately competitive.

EC’s: Officer of Spanish club for 2 years, written for newspaper for 3 years, some Interact club participation. In March I’m going to volunteer at a dental clinic, Mission of Mercy. My History class organized a school wide fundraiser for Haiti, we’ve raised over $1000 so far. We’re planning a winter carnival and expect to make about $4000. I’ll most likely be in NHS, and the editor of the newspaper next year. Tennis, Cross Country, several art classes.

I’ve had two part time jobs at stores/restaurants (nothing special) and plan to get another job this summer.

I know it’s a long shot, but I really want to go to BC! I’m also applying to Villanova and Fordham.
