Hey guys, I'm getting pretty anxious waiting for my decisions to come in and wanted to know if I have what it takes to get into the USC Honors College. This would probably be my top choice if I got in. Thanks in advance for any input!

Gender: M
Location: New Jersey

GPA - Unweighted: 93.20/100 (School does not weigh grades or have class rank - all honors level courses)

Scores:
SAT I Math: 700
SAT I Critical Reading: 730
SAT I Writing: 660

Extracurriculars: School Newspaper, Radio Club
Leadership positions: Manager at Dairy Queen
Athletic Status: Varsity Golf
Volunteer/Service Work: Volunteer feeding homeless once a month
Honors and Awards: National Merit Top Scholar Honorable Mention

You have a good chance. Last year some with 1400 SAT & 4.5 weighted GPA did not get selected, but some with lesser stats did. There are a lot of factors involved along with some randomness in the equation (something special noted in application or extracurriculars, place of residence, selecting official who reviews and the apps being compared). With the SCHC being ranked the #1 Honors College, it will be even more competitive next year. If your are not selected, the stats you cited will automatically qualify you for the Capstone Program which is also an excellent program for top students.

Seems like South Carolina has switched to holistic admissions for their honors college. Is this correct ? I’ll bet they had the same issues that Penn State faced before switching to holistic admissions from purely numbers based admissions.

@CollinsFactor thanks for the response! I agree with you, based on what I’ve researched it seems like I have about a 50/50 shot. It’s good to hear that I could still receive some significant money even if I don’t get in.

The second list, with S. Carolina at number one, excludes the metric for prestigious scholarships (Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, etc.) and puts more emphasis on honors curriculum. Honors housing and priority registration also figure more prominently in the Honors Factors category.

Njblake - I think your chances are better than 50/50. My guess would be 75%.

Axelrod - I am not an expert on the ranking lists or really much about SCHC. I just know that with the #1 ranking, SCHC has received more attention and its popularity has increased each year. Thus more applicants with higher stats. They have not switched to a holistic admissions approach. SAT, ACT, and GPA are still the biggest factors. I was just pointing out there are other factors and some random element involved.

vryproudmom - Maybe I’m getting this honors confused with another college. One of them only picks 250 students…So far he’s either been auto accepted or applied to be in Honors at the colleges he’s been accepted at. I’ll be glad when this is all over.:)
