I'm applying to the school of social sciences to study economics.
Do I have a chance?

SAT Scores: 720 math, 670 critical reading, 770 writing (9 on essay)
ACT Scores: 35 math, 32 writing, 28 writing, 27 science, 31 composite
SAT II's: 740 Math IIC, 710 IC, 660 US History, 650 Spanish (retaking and hoping above 700)
IB: Social Anthropology SL: 6

GPA: 4.0 Full IB
Weighted: 4.25
Rank 12/338 (over 90% from this public school go to college. best (or 2nd best) public school in the state of Oregon )

I've done two study abroads, so my Spanish should be much better.
Summer Internship at financial firm
Two sports
Two community service programs
Sophomore Class prez, student government 11 and 12
Constitution Team, 2nd in state
Some more stuff

I would say that you need a few more EC activities. Also your SAT II's in Spanish and U.S. History are sort of low. Excellent ACT scores though in fact they are about a billion times higher than mine and I applied early decision. I think that you should be fine if you just get a few more community service and EC activities. Good luck.

I think you are in. Don't sweat it. Apply and don't worry anymore about whether something you could've done years ago affected your chances of getting in. You did really well in HS and you should be proud. I think your SAT IIs are fine even with the 650s. I got in with a 1300 SAT and a 660, 650, 630 on my SAT IIs. Rice doesn't care about test scores that much.

Thanks for the replies...I've got more EC's, I was just too lazy to post them all. I don't really have any awards, though, since my school does all of those (but the book awards...grrr) at the end of Senior year. Most of the stuff I do doesn't have any awards like I see all over this site. I'm strongly thinking about taking U.S. History again, since I'm in IB History of the Americas, and I think that has helped round out some more knowledge, along with a high level of knowledge about the constitution.

I think you have a good chance. I wouldn't retake the SAT IIs if I were you (in fact I didn't retake my 620 Spanish but I'm definitely not in yet). I think (read: hope!) they will look on upper level classes more than test scores. I think SAT IIs are more important for kids who couldn't take AP/IB classes.

The main thing with Spanish was that I've done two three week long study abroads in Spain and Costa Rica, as well as being one of the top 3 Spanish students in IB Spanish 7-8 last year. I earned a high "A" in the class that is known to destroy 4.0. This teacher is also writing me a rec, as he knows a lot about me outside of school, also. I don't want my "lousy" score to detract from this.

I would hope earning straight a's in the Full IB program at a really good public school that sends a solid number of students to top tier schools would help overshadow my lower scores.

Wooooooo IB Anthro!!!! I got a 6 too. I HAAAAAATED paper 1, but whatareyougonnado? Sorry, I am very bitter about it, I got a perfect on my IA but it was those african american women in south central that brought me down...

I go to an awesome public school, ranked #29 best Public school and #3 in Maryland, yet Rice has never accepted someone from my high school. I hate when people post their info, but I thought I'd get some feedback.

SAT Scores: 740 math, 710 critical reading, 640 writing
SAT II's: 750 Math IIC, 770 Spanish
IB: Math Studies SL: 7
AP's: US Gov't:4, Span Lang:4, Eng Lang:4, Phys B:3, World Hist:5
GPA: 3.6
Weighted: 4.5
Almost 250 Community service (all from Esol tutoring)
Currently in: AP: Span lit, Eng Lit, French Lang, Phys C and BC Calc. Also taking guitar (mandatory art credit) and Italian.

EC's
2 Years: ESOL tutoring at Spanish Immersion Elementary school
Regional Vice President, Webmaster and Newspaper editor for Jewish Youth Movement (this consumes my life)
Summer in Israel
Club Tennis Team

Other than my jewish thing way below average EC's. Let's hope Rice doesn't care about EC's too much or I'm screwed.

I had an interview...I don't think it went that well since the guy was a tech guy and into computer science and engineering (works for IBM) and I'm into economics. I could be wrong, but I didn't say a lot of stuff I should have an it only lasted 30 minutes. I hope this doesn't hurt my chances. We just didn't really click, and he constantly seemed to attack that I wasn't in AP. Full IB is way harder and more comprehensive in my opinion. I really hope Rice isn't full of those kind of people, no offense, just for my happiness and fit. He really seemed to look down on the nonengineering students and just wouldn't be the type of person I would hang around (he was older...).

Yes, I'm from Oregon. There are two of us applying from my school to the school of social sciences (she wants to do poly sci and I want to do econ). Another girl is applying for engineering. We're all in the top 3% of the class, so I hope this doesn't hurt me, but I'd rather the other girl applying to the school of social sciences gets in since Rice really is her first choice.

right now, i think they are probably equally as hard to get into. however the school of humanities is about to takeoff and climb its way to the top. i wouldnt be surprised if in 10 years it became much more competitive.
