Chance at PENN CAS ED and WILL CHANCE BACK!

I have a question, What would the chances be for this person to get into an ivy, like Penn for instance. My friend lives here in the US, but he asked me to post this for him to get him an idea (doesn't have internet access at the moment)

[ *] SAT I (breakdown): Did not take this

[ *] ACT: 29 (31 reading, 30 english, 28 math, 28 science)

[ *] SAT II: he did not do very well on these => 650 US and 580 math 1 :/

[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.00 out of 4.00

[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/69

[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): 3 on AP US

[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis): none available

[ *] Senior Year Course Load: AP Government/Politics, AP Language and Composition, Calculus, Statistics, Astronomy, and French V

[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): No major awards, aside from NHS and on a school level, he's been part of high honor roll for every quarter he has attended at the school. (very rigorous private high school)

[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Leader of a Diversity club, model UN, Environmental Club, Community Service board, Varsity Cross Country Captain and other such feats

[ *] Job/Work Experience: unfortunately none, his parents needed him to help out at home, he couldn't get a job

[ *] Volunteer/Community service: over 1,000 hours of community service, very dedicated
[ *] Summer Activities: spent time in Bulgaria ( 2 months in the summer) working with an orphanage.

[ *] Essays: Excellent essays, i've read them, I showed them to my parents and a bunch of highly educated individuals, EXCELLENT!

[ *] Teacher Recommendation: All of his teachers love him, they see a true leader in him, so his recs were impeccable

[ *] Counselor Rec: awesome rec from counselor
[ *] Additional Rec:

[ *] Interview: He had a very good interview with Penn, the lady told him that he has an incredible story and that she would do everything she could to help him

[ /list][ b]Other[ /b][ list]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: no
[ *] Intended Major: Sociology
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[ *] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[ *] School Type: Private
[ *] Ethnicity: Bulgarian
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: 100k - 200k
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I'm not sure if he is URM since he's Bulgarian (white though), His parents attended very basic colleges in Bulgaria ( military and beauty school, respectively) So, He should be considered first generation?

Overall:

What do you guys think, He realizes that he doesn't have good scores, (those are his only downfalls) However, his essays, recs, his grades, and his interview are nearly FLAWLESS ( he would have taken more AP's, but his school has scheduling conflicts since it's so small).
He told me that he gets very nervous on testing days and can't do his best, which is really unfortunate.. He's a great guy who is very smart and would contribute alot to an Ivy.

He's come from a VERY meager background.. his parents came into this country with nothing in their wallets (heck, they didn't even have wallets) They've made a name for themselves and now he wishes to take it to the next level - he's absolutely in love with Penn)

Please find it in your hearts to chance him at Penn CAS ED

Hmm, with those scores Penn won’t be easy, but ED and the good grades will help.

This does seem like a very unique story, however, and should stand out. If the essays and recs are as good as you make them sound then he definitely has a shot.

In the end, it’s gonna be a reach (albeit, Penn is a reach for almost everyone). He’s got a shot though, good luck!

The good grades and low test scores on SAT Subject Tests and the APUSH test are troubling. This basically shows that his high school curriculum is weak and he did not go above and beyond to do well. His chances are less than 10%. Sorry to be so critical!

Thank you for your responses! Although the AP score doesn’t show rigor, trust me, the teacher that he had was definitely not the nicest of people… like i said, he has trouble testing in general  it’s unfortunate. But thank you again, he definitely has a unique story :)

If his essays are truly that amazing, he probably has a better shot than 10%, especially with ED. NJ is a very competitive area, and bad scores don’t exactly bode well. It’s still a reach for him, maybe a low/mid reach, but he does have a shot! I wish your friend, his family, and you well :)

Big Dreamer, thank you for your kind words, they really mean alot  Best of luck to you as well, i’m about to take a look at your thread!

High reach, but there is always hope. People get in with far worse stats than a 29 ACT.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1023030-chance-me-everywhere-ill-chance-you-back.html

It’s going to be very tough. Not saying he has no chance getting in, but his AP score and other standardized scores are well below the average. 4.0 GPA is pretty impressive, but school I’d say is not a top-notch looking at the courses he’s taking. I’m assuming it’s not very hard getting a 4.0 GPA at schools like that, because I had attended 2 schools where I earned 3.9 GPA without working very hard.

I think if his essays are good, then he’ll have at least a shot. Since Ivy Leagues are so academic focused, it could put him in the “deferred” pile but in his essays, if he talks about his passions and maybe explains himself about his text anxiety, I think he’d have as good a shot as any of us do into getting into UPenn.

the essays have to be excellent and show some personal growth (and hardship) which can make up for grades. Also, if he is coming from out of the country, he should be prepared to pay full tuition

One always has a much better chance at Penn when applying ED. If this student would like to go there, I suggest ED as the best way to go.

Chance me back!

ACT/SATII way too low for an Ivy

How do you know so much about your friend? Are you sure this isn’t YOU and YOUR family…
