Extracurricular:
As an immigrant to this country, I worked all throughout my high school career on a small farm to help with the financial situation in my family, got promoted to manager there two years ago.
I am researching at a microbiology lab at UIC, started there over the summer and am continuing to conduct research throughout the year.
I am doing a joint research project (materials science) with a classmate at Argonne National Labs.
TEAMS JETS - my team made top 30 nationals (rankings are a little weird, so we missed first place by something like three points but got 23rd anyway).
Varsity Science Bowl - biology, my first year doing it
Varsity Science Olympiad - chem lab / forensics, first year doing it

Essays: talked to friends who are Duke alumni / enrolled right now, had the essays reviewed and edited, etc.

Recommendations: from two teachers, one my math teacher with whom I have a great relationship, the other from the sponsor of my research with Argonne, so both letters are most likely stellar.
Also have a recommendation from the doctor with whom I work at UIC.

Other:
School is ~4000 strong, highly competitive (ranked top 100 in US before large influx of section 8 housing - (I do not mean for a post hoc, ergo propter hoc argument here, just for reference)).
Ethnicity: Russian, immigrated to US
Gender: male
State: Illinois

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Shameless bump:

I am genuinely interested to see if the other members of this forum think that my lack of extracurriculars is bad enough, even considering the rest of the app, to significantly impact my chances.

Probably in without the ED bump

I’d say in unless you really screw something up on the application. It’s obvious you are interested in science and all you need to do it explain why engineering which should be easy. Your ECs are pretty solid as are your test scores and grades. Objectively speaking, you’ve checked all the boxes. But again, if you come across as a sociopath or something in your essays (which I hope you don’t) then all bets are off.

Alright, I will make sure to try not to come off as a psychopath in my essays, SBR. Thanks for your input :)
