Hi guys,
I have always wanted to go to Pre-Med as I have a lot of passion for it, but I am worried about my chances. I loved chemistry and biology. I got a 5 on AP Chemistry last year as a sophomore, and this junior year, I took AP Physics 1 and AP Biology.
I enjoyed bio, but the AP Exam was really tough this year in general. I am not aiming for ivy leagues, but just some type of accelerated pre-med programs in the state. But even those programs are very selective. My SAT is average and my GPA is really good, and my sports, research, extracurriculars are good, along with two awards in general and science competitions that I have won for the state.
Most of the people I know that got into Pre-Med had a 5 in AP Biology because that is one of the most important AP Classes for Pre-Med.
Without a 5 on AP Biology, what do you think my chances are at getting into a selective/accelerated Pre-Med program?
what is accelerated premed? are you talking about BS/MD? I would not consider those premed. most top 80 colleges have premed program. What state are you in? your flag ship state univ can be your first stop, some states may have couple good state univ to choose from. With AP Chem score of 5 and good GPA, I odn’t see any problem you can get in a premed program
First of all, pre med is an intent. It is not a specific major nor is it specific program at college.
You can major in anything and still be a pre-med so long as you complete your medical school pre-reqs. My daughters med school classmates have majors ranging from forestry to theology to music theory to English lit.
AP classes are good indicators that you’re prepared for college level coursework, but have nothing to do becoming a pre-med.
BA/MD programs require strong science grades, AP science classes, a strong ACT or SAT score, plus significant exposure to the medical profession through shadowing and volunteering.
