I’m a first generation college student (my parents immigrated to America), Chinese female, and I live in West Virginia. I have had straight A’s all my life, 6 AP classes (my school offers 9 total), National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar, a decent amount of EC’s with some leadership positions, 250 some hours of community service, was selected to attend some competitive academic camps in my state, and I played one sport for just my senior year. ACT 31, SAT 2230 (1430 combined). I wrote my essay on living as an Asian in a predominantly white community. Will I be considered “diverse” enough for this scholarship? Or is using my race stereotypical and overused? Thank you for any thoughts at all!

Its tough to say without looking at your application. The big question is…are your community service hours directy related to want makes you diverse? There needs to be a connection to get the scholarship.

I didn’t mention anything about community service in my essay because it didn’t fit. I would find it hard to say volunteering to spend time with the elderly hardly promotes diversity.

I think it’s difficult for anyone to predict if your essay and stats are what OSU is looking for with the MSP. We don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, nor have we had the opportunity to read your essay or see your application. I haven’t seen an exact pattern of MSP winners enough to predict what makes someone a good candidate. My D has stats very similar to yours and is also Asian, while I am not. We are in state and have not heard anything yet. We’re just waiting impatiently.
