Yeah, I've been working really hard to bring that up...(that was only my first time taking it..and i'm terrible at math :()
But, yeah, I was very interested in Stony Brook only I was worried due to the large amount of commuters? I'm just worried because seeing i'm from Florida, i'd be on campus pretty much 24/7...

Hopefully you can raise your SAT score, especially the math, and good luck with the ACT. The schools look at your best score from each category on the SAT, so taking it multiple times is a plus. Have you gotten tutored at all? A math tutor might be a good investment.

I happen to love SUNY New Paltz. We were just there last weekend for a craft fair. It is such a cool place. My son is transferring there next semester. He is in school in Florida now. He was originally accepted there out of HS but ended up elsewhere. I think he is sorry he didn't choose to attend. They have a great orientation for freshman and such a strong community feeling. It has gotten much more competitive to get in at NP and they had their largest freshman class ever this year. I think the Newsweek pick of best small state school really put them on the map.

He has friends at both Geneseo and Bing. They seem happy but those schools are much more rural and he didn't think they were for him.

Thanks for the information!
And, LilyMoon, I have just started with an ACT tutor who is basically going to focus on why I do so poorly in math...haha. Thanks for the feedback! Oh, thats great to hear because I really have no knowledge about how New paltz is beyond the actually stats as I was unable to visit. It sounds wonderful!

Good luck with the tutor and the ACT!
If I can answer any questions you might have about New Paltz, I will try. I have visited there a few times now.

If you can bring up the SAT score, you stand a decent shot.
But definitely make sure your essay and recommendation are top notch. Binghamton is only going to get more competitive this year.

Thanks! Yeah, I've already asked a teacher to write the recommendations who I've had for the past two years (most recently in AP Gov) and it should be extremely strong as she knows me very well. And my essays are in the works!

northeastmom - all incoming freshman are guaranteed housing on-campus whether in-state or OOS. After that they can choose to live on campus or off. As a transfer, housing was not available this past Fall due to the huge incoming class. Usually there was some availablitlity in past years. My son is hoping to get on-campus housing this Spring as a transfer. Hopefully, things have settled down from the fall and some housing has opened up.

I am assuming your child is an in-coming freshman. The choices of housing for them are either suite style or corridor style dorms. They can pick a preference and the school will try and accomodate them. There is also a program called FYI - First Year Initiative. They live in the dorm together, I forget if it's Esopus or Lenape, both are newer dorms on campus. They take 2 courses together and have a more close knit first year experience. If you want more info on that program, here is a link. State University of New York at New Paltz: First Year Interest Groups: FYI: The First-Year Initiative

Off campus housing is not hard to get. There is an off campus housing board to help you. Off-Campus Housing Bulletin Board -
The off campus housing is affordable, but the quality of the housing varies greatly. It all depends what you are looking for. There are mostly houses that groups of students live in. Some of them are quite run down, so it would be important to see the condition before making a commitment. There are also some garden apartment complexes in the area that are supposed to be nice.
You would only need a car if the housing you found was out of walking distance to the school. There seems to be quite a bit of housing within a few minutes walking distance though.
Will you be looking for off campus housing for your child?

lilymoon, thank you. No, I want as much on campus housing as possible. I only asked since housing does not seem to be guaranteed after freshman year.
