ok so i've made chance threads before, but i've recently visited tulane university and absolutely fell in love with it. but i'm worried as i'm not the strongest applicant and their acceptance rate is depressingly low... so here are my stats

UW GPA: 3.7
ACT: 31, taking it again in a few weeks
ECs: dont have a ton, but have been heavily involved in horseback riding and dance my entire life
member of NHS

volunteering in south africa this summer

would i have a much better chance early action? and if apply early action, will i have a greater advantage applying single choice early action? please chance me i will chance back!!

bumpppppppppppp

First off, Tulane’s acceptance rates aren’t “depressingly low”…many people this year have been complaining that their admissions aren’t selective enough! I’m a potential Tulane applicant as well, and I would say that you seem to have a fair chance. Your grades are good, just perhaps try to improve your extracirrculars and gain more volunteer hours. If Tulane is indeed your first choice, then I would certainly apply there early. If schools see that your are devoted to their institution, it will improve your chances of admission greatly.

thanks for the advice, but although i dont have a million ecs, i’ve been very dedicated to each one i’ve listed… anyone else?

your stats look pretty good and if you can prove to admissions that your ecs are really your passions i think that you will have a decent shot
i fell in love with tulane too so hopefully we both can get it!

thanks, anyone else?

sorry i’m just really curious… bump i’ll chance back!

Looks good. They do have a kind of low rate but…have you taken the SAT? It might be better. I would recommend doing more EC’s during the summer or anytime. Just tell admission your passions. But…I hope you get in. Good luck.

yeah i took the sat and didn’t do to hot…

I think you have a decent chance! Your gpa seems to be in the right range.

You’re smack in the ranges they tend to admit; ndrwum’s right, an SAT would help a bunch. If you’re unhappy with your score, try retaking.

Early action will probably help, but if you’re REALLY in love with this school (if it’s your unquestioned #1 choice) and if it’s offered, early decision would probably boost more.

Overall, I think you’ve got a pretty solid app. A good essay or interview would push you over the top… good luck!

Could you chance me back, please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1118399-chance-theatre-acting-inclined-junior-ill-chance-you-back.html#post12333784

Why worry about the SAT? Your ACT score is absolutely fine. So is your GPA. The best way to proceed is to apply SCEA as early as possible to Tulane (this is key, try to get all materials to Tulane by early October or sooner), emphasize your strong interest in the EC’s you have (which actually is better than a lot of different ones), and show a lot of interest in Tulane by attending local events and answering all the questions on their application. If you do these things I think you have an excellent chance.

thanks so much for the advise?? do you know if the rate for single choice early action acceptance higher than just regular early action?

*is higher

I think it’s higher, but I don’t have the statistics at hand. It does, however, show a greater interest than non-binding early action-- which, as fallenchemist points out, makes a big difference to the school.

i think you have a fair chance . just show that you are dedicated to your ECs . i personally thing its better to have a few ECs you’re dedicated to than to have a ton that you are interested in .

and consider re-taking your SAT also. Early Action would also be a smart move if youre really in love with the school

Again with the SAT!! Tulane accepts the ACT, and your score is solid. The only reason to retake it is to improve your chances at a higher scholarship. That is well worth the investment. But that can be the SAT or ACT.

Anyway, Tulane has never published stats for the people that get accepted via SCEA vs. EA vs. RD as far as I know, but the admin people have told me that both are signs of interest, and the SCEA definitely more so. Otherwise why offer it? It really is its only purpose compared to EA. So if Tulane is for sure #1 choice, it is a no brainer to apply SCEA.

haha thanks fallenchemist for your words of encouragement and great advice!! and i dont need the scholarship money, so i’m just taking the act again to prove to myself that i can do better! i just wish i could flash forward one year just to know if i’ve been accepted… this is going to be a long year!

kudos to you for just trying to improve, that’s nice. Apply SCEA by early October and I think you will have an answer by late October. Makes your wait a lot shorter.

anyone else??? will chance back!
