You could easily get into any of those schools

I agree with nzhang24 for the most part. I think you have a good chance at all of the schools though, especially with good recs and essays.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/971007-chances-emory-davidson-others.html

ok thanks. yea the ACT score saved my ass big time. anybody else?

final bump…

Everything looks solid, I’d say all your “reach” schools are within reach, which is rare to say.

Your ACT score is strong enough for all the schools - Penn might be a bit more of a reach b/c it’s UPenn. I think you gave a great shot at NU and Cornell and Pitt.

So your GPA and ACT are both very very good. Also, your EC’s are pretty strong.

UPenn — High Match

Northwestern — Match

Cornell — High Match

Pittsburgh — Safety

Purdue — Safety

ok thanks. Are Duke and UPenn on roughly the same level admissions wise?

UPenn and Cornell are reaches. I think you have a great shot at Northwestern and Pitt, Purdue.

Hello, thanks for the previous chance!

You should be in easily at Pitt and Purdue, while Penn and Northwestern will be reaches and Cornell will be a low reach/high match.

They are all in your reach, just make sure the colleges can identify your hook.

UPenn - A friend of mine got in ED with similar stats though less ECs. That being said it’s still UPenn so I’d say it’s a low reach (or high match which I suppose is synonymous)

Northwestern -In

Cornell - In

Pittsburgh - In, probably looking at some nice scholarship money

Purdue - Same as pitt

Thanks for the replies everyone…itll come down to those pesky supplemental essays for Upenn, Cornell, NU

I’ve heard the term “hook” tossed around a lot on these boards. What exactly is it BISORI? is it the one thing that separates you from all the other applicants?

Thanks for chancing me!

Pitt and Purdue should be matches.
And as long as you write good essays for UPenn, Northwestern, and Cornell, I see no reason why you wouldn’t get in!

Even with ED, Penn is a stretch. Your class rank is ehh, where Penn really emphasizes on class rank. Your ECs are stellar for the average student, but there is no clear focus anywhere on your application. I like your ACT score, but your AP scores are slightly undesirable for Penn. You could probably get away with it at the other schools you mentioned, save for Cornell and Northwestern. This will depend on how you package yourself in your application. An Asian male with intentions for Pre-Med or Law is not going to make a compelling case to adcoms. If you were interested in English or Europian literature though, that would be another story.

DECA state comp is not very impressive because it is not too hard to achieve, especially in some states where you don’t need to qualify for states by winning in the district comp. An international champion in DECA, however, is quite another story. But with what you wrote, it seems like you’ve had minimal involvement and even less impact in DECA, so that alone is not impressive.

Your summer job at the movies is good, because it shows you have real-world exposure, especially if you come from an affluent background.

Your achievement with Speech is good, considering that you have leadership. However, I’d like to see some more awards and distinctions, more so at the national level.

Overall, your application is strong for some top schools, but not a compelling case for Penn. Your stats, while admirable, are common for Penn. Even more so, your ECs are almost stereotypical for an Asian applicant–and scattered too.

Certainly on CC, your application may seem unlikely at Penn or Cornell, but in the entire spectrum of the applicant pool, you have a decent shot. Still, I recommend having some better safeties (schools in between Northwestern and Pittsburgh.)
