Chance at UPenn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Duke, etc. I'll Chance Back!!!

School Choices
Goal - UPenn
2nd's - Cornell, John's Hopkins, Duke
Backups/Matches - GaTech, UIUC, UGA

I intend to major in Biochemistry or some sort of Biology/Chemistry mix.

White Male (Unfortunately...)
Competitive Public High School in Metro Atlanta, GA

GPA - 4.0 Unweighted, 4.321/5.0 Weighted
Rank - 7/465 (Top 2%)
Currently a Junior

I have taken all Honors/AP (when possible)

Tests -
First SAT isn't back yet but between 2100-2200 based on practice tests
PSAT (10th grade) - 180
PSAT (11th grade) - 216

Plan to take USH, Lang, Math II, and Chem

AP Physics B - 4

ECs
National Honor Society - (Running for VP unopposed...so VP)

My biggest lacking is in service, but I have participated in 3 Susan G. Komen's Row for the Cure raising over $2000 to donate. Also, I have participated in 4 River's Alive! which is a program to clean up local rivers, collecting trash mostly. Every summer I volunteer for my rowing club to teach kids how to row at summer session, acquiring about 90 hours per summer.

Senior schedule:
AP Calc BC
AP Chem
AP Literature
AP Econ/Gov
Senior Psychology
Either AP French or AP Bio or AP Physics C or Honors Anatomy (Undecided)

What should I do?
What class should I take next year, AP Bio, Physics C, Anatomy, or continue on with French into AP. And, with my scores, ECs, and other criteria, would ED be a better idea or should I wait for RD?

This summer I plan to participate in a precollege program, like PAVE or UPenn's Biomed Academy, or something else.

Let me know if you need any more info?

Thank you so much for any advice. I really appreciate the help.

Your ECs look pretty good–several leadership spots. Good PSAT…you’re not a national merit semifinalist in GA? The only thing I can think that would hurt your application would be your scores. Tests aren’t the most important thing, but you might want to aim for higher subject test scores when you take them.

Here is what I think (take with a grain of salt):
JHU - low reach
Cornell - low reach
UPenn - upper mid reach
Duke - upper mid reach
GeorgiaTech - match
I’m not familiar with the other schools

Chance back?

:/

But that aside, assuming that your SAT predictions are close to what you said, I am inclined to agree with GM2009’s chances.

Thanks guys for the chances. Regarding National Merit Scholar, we do not get to know that until next year around September (ugh…), but I was in 99% percentile, so I assume my chances are good.

Bump. Anyone? I’ll chance back

get 32+ on the ACT.

maintain gpa

get leadership positions

other htan that you’re good to go.

chance me^^^^ :]

I think you are doing well. Your grades and everything are good, just make sure you get good test scores and you will be competitive. But remember, no one is a shoe-in at top schools.

i agree with what insanitywolf said. these schools recieve so many applicants that it is impossible to tell for sure exactly what they’re looking for and they can afford to make wonky decisions. that being said, it seems like you have a pretty good shot at at least some of them. a solid score on the SATs would greatly improve your chances like somewhere in the 2200+ range. and chance me for NYU! i dont know how to include the link being new to the site though:/

I would try to find some interesting extracurricular activities to get involved in. Generic community service is no good, find something that will help you stand out

Thanks for the advice, do you have any recommendations?

Anybody else, I’ll chance back.

@davidr721 I’m like you, but a sophomore, seriously. On my PSAT I got a 181. A little lower grades (like 3.9x), and I’m a rower! Do you want to be recruited, what is your 2k? Oh and heavyweight or light?

I think you’ve got a great shot at all your schools, you seem like a motivated student and you never know what that decision letter may hold…

chance me plz…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1049405-chance-hopefull-engineer.html

Your GPA is great, and your PSAT scores seem to bode well for your SAT scores. Assuming thats at a pretty decent level, I would say as long as you maintain your GPA you have as good of a chance as anyone to get into those top schools.
