Reach IMO ......(10 chars)

IMO, it's usually more difficult to get into any VA state school from OOS - but I'd give it a try, anyway. You just never know.... Do visit the campus/interview if you have a chance. (You also have an athletic background which could be a plus. You might also want to look at schools where you could possibly get an athletic scholarship.) Good luck!

jus curious, what is the weakness of my app that would make uva a reach?

cJ1212,
My son was applying this past year from OOS, so I've been carefully watching the stats on other OOS kids for the last two years.

Generally, the GPA, rigor of classes, and class rank (i.e. the transcript) seem to carry more weight with UVA than SAT or ACT scores. Having said that, admitted OOS students usually have an UW GPA close to 3.9 or above (weighted GPA's vary so much from school to school that it's hard to generalize about those). They usually have a class rank in the top 5-7%, and have taken many - if not all- honors and AP classes. Those, of course, are just the numbers. Lots of other things like EC's, recs, and essays all come into play...and the quality of those is very difficult for any of us to judge here. The admissions officers are probably the only ones who could tell you exactly what they're looking for in those areas...

As far as the numbers go, there are always exceptions, and as LBP says, you never know. The college admissions process is not always consistent, nor predictable, which means you should apply to any school you're seriously interested in - assuming you're somewhere within the window for admission.

Happily, my son got in to UVA and will be starting there this fall - and believe me, he knows just how very lucky he is.

Good luck!

u/w 3.7 in soph year and u/w 3.4 in junior year will not clinch it. 2008 cycle will be an all time high for college apps (due to the peaking baby boomlet) and it is going to be a dog fight, plain and simple.

You should definitely try, but don't count on it. My d applied and thought she had a pretty good shot--above the 75th percentile with test scores, etc. She had all the rest--4.0+, top 10% in her class, excellent ECs, outstanding recs. Well, so did lots of other OOS, so she wasn't even waitlisted. :( But, she had zero percent chance of getting in if she didn't apply, so go for it. Just be sure you have safeties/matches that you are happy with, too.

cj,

I was denied admissions for Fall 2007 at UVA. First, they wait listed me, but then I never got off. My statistics were pretty similar.
White, Jewish male from most competitive public high school in Boca Raton, FL
Top 15th Percentile( lack of AP really hurts at my school, NOT MY FAULT THOUGH)
UW GPA:3.7
W GPA: 4.1 ish
SAT: 1200's/1600's (not exactly 1200, but like 1230)
ACT: 28

ECs:
Key Club
Choir
Drama
Numerous fundraisers for cancer(cancer survivor, :))
NHS
ETC

Took mostly honors and AP courses.

Reasons for denial could've been:
Low SAT/ACT score
Did not apply ED( couldn't since I had not taken SATs till October, and wanted at least 2-3 seatings of both SATs and ACTs)
Only 2 AP courses( diagnosed with cancer JR year and had to drop my AP's and only took 2 senior year since I had to take mandatory like Chemistry Honors that I could not take while on chemotherapy and withdrawn from school.)

Hope this helps!

thanks man, good luck whereever u ended up
anybody else have a take?

Boo don't apply from Florida and take a spot away from other OOS people. btw you're weighted gpa is not a 4.9 by colleges scales. and uhh maybe bump up the act score a bit but your ec's be very nice... can i like steal your ec's?

bumppp 10char

anyone else?

I think it is a reach, just because you are OOS, and they accept only around 20% of OOS students...good luck though
