Chance at Williams ED?

After consulting with my GC and a teacher at my school who is a Williams graduate, I decided to apply Early Decision to Williams. Please evaluate my chance at Williams.

GPA: 3.70/ 4.0 at a very competitive but small private school (The maximum GPA is 4.0, not 4.3. Anything above 94 is an A and something in between 84 and 93 is a solid B. No pluses/minuses)
Class Rank: My school doesn't actually rank, but my GC told me I am like #15/75.
SAT I: 2270 (taken in June, 710 C/R, 780 Math, 780 Writing)
SAT IIs: Math IIC 790, Chem 770, US history 700
APs: Chem 5, US History 4, English Language and Composition 4
TOEFL: 280
English is my second language, and I have been under American curriculum for 3 years.

AP courses I’ll be taking in senior year: AP English Literature, AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, AP Spanish Language,

My GPA for the first semester of junior year is really crappy. I got something like 3.15, so my cumulative GPA went down significantly. However, I bounced back by getting a 3.75 in the second semester.

E/C and Awards
* Orchestra for all 4 years (I have been playing the cello since 1998)
* University Interscholastic League Cello Solo 1st Class (UIL is a musical achievement testing used in Texas. I got the highest grade in 9th grade. I moved to South Korea in my sophomore year)
* 1st place winner for The 15th Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association Math Contest (in 9th grade)
* Spanish Club President (12)
* PSAT National Merit Commended Scholar (11)
* National Honor Society (12)
* 200 hours of community service at a Korean medicine clinic (It's a nonprofit organization in Korea where old ppl and the phsically challenged people are treated with oriental medicine. I treat patients with acupuncture and moxibustion)
* Taekwondo 2nd Dan holder
* Internship at two hospitals (50 hours)

My counselor says my grades and test scores are good enough, but still I am very worried since I am "only" in top 20% at my current school (I was in top 1% at my previous school, which is a big public school). And downward trend and lack of EC's would probably hurt me, but do I have a reasonable shot?

hey so you are an international student right?
i'm korean as well and i'm applying ED.
sorry i'm not a chance expert, but it certainly looks good. hope it all works out.

i aint so sure if i am considered an international student, but I have US Citizenship

if you have an US citizenship, you will not be considered as an international student which is certainly a good thing. Your numbers all look good. I would focus on increasing your test scores next 3 months or so. Also, developing a unique application that focuses on your strong points will greatly increase your chance. Pick some kind of an activity that you spent much time then elaborate and emphasize it. Show the admission commitee that you can bring something unique that others can't.

If you do that, I think you will have a great chance. Good luck!!

hey hopeman:
i remember u said u emphasized music in your application last year.. what kind of music was it and how involed were you?
just curious...

oh and one more, do u know how many int'l students applied in the ED round and how many were accepted (in ed)?
thanx

i heard for class of 2008 5 out of 50 were accepted. for 2009, it was much more generous (15 out of 50 something). for the specifics of my application, I will PM you.

from the 35 not accepted, i know of at least two who were deferred and subsequently accepted:)

hopeman's right. they decided to accept more internationals during ED for 2009, so the trend might just continue for 2010! you can check out the articles in the williamsrecord for numbers.

hello123: instead of listing a bunch of ecs, pick a few that you're really passionate about and make it stand out. for example, my main ecs were touch rugby, forensics/debate and scuba diving (my essay was on scuba diving, i had my zoology/scuba advisor write one of my recs, etc). good luck!
