Chance before schedule visit

My daughter is a high school junior and we are planning to tour some colleges in the Boston area this spring. Number one on her list is Northeastern - she loves the idea of co-oping! Before I spring for airfare, want to get an idea of her chances on getting in!

SAT - 2010 - first attempt, no studying. Will take again early summer, along with the ACT this spring.

GPA - 4.89/6.0 weighted - I know, very weird system. Hard to equate with other systems, as you can't get a 6.0 in this program! She took 2 APs last year, is taking 3APs and 2 pre-APs this year, will take at least 4 APs next year.

Now, to what I'm worried about. She's always gotten As and Bs in her hard courses, but due to an outside job that got to be too much for her, she may get 1 or 2 Cs for the semester in her 2 of her AP classes. Will this keep her out of Northeastern?

Her Sat’s are in the upper end of the 25-75% group of student’s they admit according to what I’ve seen recently. In other words, half of the students they admit fall into that window. As you say it is hard to know what your GPA situation is, but your school should be able to help you as they have to be able to explain their system to any schools your daughter applies to. Along with my daughter’s transcripts they send along a school information sheet that explained her classes in relation to the other curriculum in the school. With that in hand, NU will see see she has taken tough classes all along. There is also a place on the common app. that gives you a place to explain something you might need to explain… for your daughter, a blip in an otherwise very strong academic record. Is it a given? No- Northeastern is creeping up in their Freshman Profile numbers every year. That and the shear numbers of applications make it impossible to really know… Northeastern is my daughter’s absolute #1. She applied EA and will hear in the week to 10 days I assume. For her, it is the perfect mix. Hope this helps… this is my second time around. My other D is at GW in DC. Let me know if I can help in any way.

My son is a freshman at GW! What year is your daughter? Interesting that our kids are interested in the same schools.

Our school does send along a school info sheet. But they changed the system from the one they used when my son was there. His was on a 5.0 scale.

I read somewhere that NE uses weighted GPA only. Do you know if this is true?

Good luck to your daughter!

Thank you! it is an emosional rollercoaster isn’t it. As far as GPA, I don’t know what they use… I’d think they look at the gpa weighted and unweighted in light of the school curriculm. I wouldn’t be too worried as it looks like she is taking taking advantage of classes and challenging herself. My daughter is a sophomore and LOVES it!!! It was her MUST school and continues to be. Is your son happy? Where is he living? My daughter was in Potomic last year and in Mitchell this year. We are from Maine, where are u?

We’re in Texas. My son just loves it there. He’s in Thurston (which is where he wanted to be) and has 5 roommates! And believe it or not, they all get along great!

I know I’m probably worrying too much about this for my daughter; she doesn’t seemed concerned at all! Just going to keep emphasing keeping those grades up. We’ll probably see Northeastern in April. I just love Boston and hope she does too!

Oh, and what is your daughter studying at GW? My son entered as undecided. He got a lot of credit for AP courses, though, so he’s taking 3 classes in the spring to try to decide on a major: political science and economics.

I know, I just want her to get what she wants! She has worked so hard to put her best effort out there. She SHOULD get in, but you never know. Your daughter sounds like she already knows she has to get and keep the grades up. Mine is harder on herself than I ever could be. My son… still have 1 more to go through this process with… is Freshman this year and is finally realizing how important each and every point is. It has been an education for him just watching the process this time around. It has been positive!

Bless your son in a Thurston 6 man! I’m sure it is a blast. My D would not have done well with that much going on. She is a Psych Major, has long term thoughs of a PHD in Clinical Psychology. She started out as an english/creative writng major, but after AP Lit/Comp she decided she couldn’t take another 4 years of the same! Sort of burned her out! She is trying to find a complimentary minor.

I love Boston too. Feel I’d have the best of all worlds: one in DC and one in Boston. Plus one is only 3 hours away!!! Maine is a tough one travel wise.
