Statistics = Korean male, Protestant.
NJ resident
Tenafly High School
My sister went to Columbia SEAS
I am interested in Boston College for its business because I have some interest in the field of economics or business just in general. If someone can please tell me the difference in chance of my acceptance into just Boston College and its school of business, that would be wonderful.

SAT: Took once and got a 1960. (I am going to take again and probably going to around 2100)
HS cumulative GPA: 3.5 <-4.3 is an A+, so 3.5 is in between B+ (3.3) and A- (3.7) (I completely bombed Freshman year)
I took one to two honors each year and am going to take 2 APs and 1 Honors
School Activities
Tennis (one season)
Winter Track (3 times), Spring Track (2 times)
Member of the Entomology Club twice, Math Club twice, Sierra Student Coalition, Career club once each

Volunteer Work
Teaching kids with autism. About 200 hours I got from this.

Outside of School activities (just wondering how much these will help in my acceptance):
I was in the Bergen County Chorus two years in a row, and North Regional Chorus once.
I tutored kids on how to play the drums.
I am also the president of the youth group at my church and the drummer in the Praise Band.
Please give me some honest thoughts people THANK YOU!

I took 3 practice tests so far and I’ve been getting 2200s… considering they are lenient on the essay I’m thinking 2100 or at the very least above 2000 would that be better? I’m also thinking about ED for Boston College would that be better?

Boston College does not offer a ED program, only EA and it is more competitive than regular decision.

I would have to agree with everyone else that BC would be a reach for you. Your numbers are not much lower than mine were and I was accepted but it seems like you lack depth and breadth in your extracurricular activities and academics. It will definitely hurt you if you did not take the most demanding curriculum offered at your high school. That is probably what they take most into consideration, along with passion in extracurriculars.

Dear jml0310 : Many of our previous posters have properly assessed your posted profile. You are currently a stretch for Boston College based on your board scores, GPA, academic rigor (overall AP load compared to others), and extra curricular depth. Rather than repeating the assessments already given, let’s offer some positive ideas about what you might do to improve your overall candidacy.

[1] Focus on why you want to attend Boston College. Is the core requirement something that attracts you or repels you about a BC education? I ask these questions because for some reason you mentioned your sister’s attendance at Columbia SEAS which seems disjoint from discussing your profile. If business is your passion, what have you done in High School regarding business that makes your resume potentially standout based on already completed achievements?

[2] Focus on your personal passions. Your extra curriculars come across as “dabbling” in a number of different areas - short term stints in lots of random activities. Yet, there is an undercurrent of achievement in the music field by making the Regional Chorus. Is music a passion? Do you receive great joy from performance arts?

[3] Focus on making a difference. How did your church group leadership help others? How did your tutoring allow a student to move forward? Why did you choose to work with students with autism? How did it make a difference to those individuals?

Now, these might seem like we are spitting back direct questions about your profile - and in many cases, we are! Given that BC is a stretch school for you, taking these points in order might help you determine how much passion you might have to become a member of the Class of 2014. Good luck with your introspection on these topics.
