-Don't know income bracket, but will apply for financial aid.

I think you are very competitive for CoE, assuming you have excellent recommendations and essays. Your stats are very similar to my S’s (admitted RD to CoE) and you have more APs than he had. (Are you really taking 9 AP classes senior year, or will some of those be self-study exams?)

If your school sends multiple students to the ivy league, your guidance counselor is probably the person best qualified to “chance you”.

Grades, classes and scores are good (sans the SAT CR section, but you have the ACT to make up for that), extracurriculars are good. Is your “Intel research” extensive?

You’re probably in. Just don’t mess up your essays.

No apparant weaknesses – welcome to the admission lottery!! To get your ticket, just send in that application.

Seriously, you have as good a shot as anyone from what I see.

The intel isn’t extensive at all not going to lie, but I worked hard on it (no chance of winning I think). I’m taking 9 exams, all classes, my school offers like every exam. I’m taking 8 AP classes (Physics C counts as 1 class). Yeah my guidance said my SAT CR is the worst part of my app so I took the ACT and the 36 in reading (i was shocked) offsets that, I hope haha.

You’re qualified. The rest is up to the ad coms.

Edit: Recommendation from the summer professor at cornell!

Great shot! Still a crapshoot, but you have 300 tickets instead of 1 put into the raffle. :)

I hope it works out, now I’m a lot more comfortable!
I still maintain the position though that most people on this site will do really great things, everyone is motivated and qualified for all of these schools it seems.

I would say: anyone with a SAT or 650 and above in each category; "A"s in all of the classes (quotes on A to not confuse it with as, and note the bolded word, all); and a good essay is qualified.

It is those little ECs and how much you can convince the adcoms that their college is the one you want to be in (kinda’ goes along with the essay) that makes each person’s chances different. (^Also, you have to visit the college. Have to. Adcoms might understand if you live on the other coast, but anything within a half-a-day’s driving distance you better visit.)

My recollection is that Cornell’s Common Data Set indicates that demonstrated interest is not a factor (i.e., visits don’t matter to them).

I’m not sure I believe this, though.

Perhaps we’re the exception that proves the role, but DS did not visit Cornell before applying, even though we’re only a 4-hour drive away. This is because he added Cornell to his list about 3 days before the RD application deadline. Not only did he get accepted into CoE, he will be attending Cornell.

Visiting is still a great idea, especially if you already know you are very interested in attending, and ABSOLUTELY before applying ED! Not because the won’t accept you if you haven’t visited, but because you need to know for sure that you like it enough to commit to attending if you are accepted!

Interesting, mathmom, I might have to reformulate my idea!
Maybe his essay/stats were high enough that Cornell wanted to admit him in?
Smart boy. :D

We heard rumors that Cornell likes Vermonters, possibly because they can handle the Ithaca winters ;-)

My S had very good stats (but not outstanding for CoE) and IMO very good essays, average ECs. He also had excellent recommendations (we saw both teachers’ but not the GC’s). We’ll never know what the adcoms saw in his application that led them to move it from the “qualified” pile to the “yes” pile, but I do feel like he’s a very good “fit” for Cornell, and Cornell for him :)

It was the Cornell Days visit that “sealed the deal” for my son to decide to attend Cornell.

Haha. Even though I live in NY, I do not think I can handle the winters. I hate the cold and get sick a lot. >.<

Looks like the essays and and recommendations get bumped up as one of the most important things. If everyone could tell me what they think sold them the admission to their college, I can formulate a general idea eventually (100 years or so).
Guess we will never know. :(

Goluhaque, I think the international aid is null. Why don’t you go to IIT? Kanpur, btw - that’s the best one. ^_^

Haha I’m instate, I visited last year and attended the summer program this year there and loved it!

Bump, any other opinions? How bout for A&S Math Major as well?
