Wondering if my child have a chance at Cornell (out of state) 35 ACT, Eagle Scout, 2 years IT internship, unweighted GPA 3.9 , 14 AP class ( 4 , 5 ) scores . Awarded AP Scholar Awards, swimmer, and different clubs. Got deffer-ed from GaTech , MIT and rejected from CMU fro EA.
Any hope?
The fact that they were deferred from MIT and GTech, rather than rejected outright, means that they are competitive for a program that is as selective as Cornell CS . However, it is a reach for anybody.
So I would say that your kid has as much hope as any very competitive applicant, or, in other words, the chances are low, but better than average.
How about his chances @ MIT and GATech (he was def). I think his matches are UIC Urbana, UMich, Yale. We thought GATech was 100 % Match
Safety is Purdue and worst case GSU and Transfer. We are still waiting from Berkeley and Cal-tech and I don’t know if these are reach or match. I think being Asian is hard.
Regular (March 15th) . Well we are immigrant parents and did my CS from Georgia State University back then, we Asian parents only know MIT and Harvard Now with first child I am learning with him. 35 ACT, Eagle scout , two years internship with IT industry , I thought he have chances ( 14 AP classes) and so many clubs. I don’t know what will happen. Looks like I am more stressed than him.
So is being a student who spends 2 hours -each way- on a bus to school every day. So is being a white middle-class girl from the mid-Atlantic region. So is being any student in an under-performing HS . etc., etc.
Your son is applying to super selective programs at super selective schools. It is simply brutal competition. Your son has obviously worked very very hard and has a lot to be proud of. But…if you think Yale is a “Match” you need to seriously re-calibrate your expectations.
And, parent to parent: think through what you are going to feel if it’s ‘worst case’ Purdue or GSU. Will you be disappointed in him? will he feel that he has let you down? If the rest of admissions season has more disappointments for him, be mindful that you don’t add to his pain.
Did he apply to CMU ED, and got rejected ? They don’t have EA.
Will you be full-pay or need lot of financial aid ?
The reason I ask is, CMU and Cornell may prefer full-pay kids.
Cornell had a record high ED applicants this year, so RD admit rate may go down
CS major has become really popular and highly competitive the last few years and Berkeley and GT are very hard to get in.
Yale is a reach for almost everyone
Hope he picked a good list of matches/safeties, that he likes.
We made a mistake and didn’t say full pay on his CMU application and also on any. Might get some financial aid. Yep rejected on CMU. Looks like I ma losing up my mind. Just spoke with my boss, here at CDC and she was at the same-boat last year. My son will eventually get into one of the colleges
Thank you ,
I will not be disappointed. Until this morning I would have been because I went to GSU , 20 years ago, paid international fee and worked hard so that my kids go to well known college. But now I want him to be successful. Like I said I am so vague about Match and reach and whatnot. People, I came across, who are getting less stats than my son are going to their dream colleges. But looks like those people are doign quest-bridge (which I found recently) Yale is definitely a high reach. I never said it is match (it is way over reach or whatever you call it) .
@tenseMom All these selective colleges are hard to get into for anyone. Cornell is very selective, although it’s not as selective as MIT and CMU SCS. Your son should still have a good chance to get into GT as an in-state student. ACT 35 isn’t considered a top score anymore because so many students earn a 35 or 36 in ACT and 1550+ in SAT. You did not mention your son’s subject SAT scores. They are required or recommended by all selective colleges. An 800 on MATH 2 isn’t considered impressive for Cornell. There are 56,000 students scoring an 800. Race and gender may play a part in college admissions but not as huge as some people would believe.
QuestBridge is for low-income students. Colleges have a different criteria for them. You shouldn’t compare your son to a QuestBridge admit.
My bad. I happen to remember at the end that he applied to Yale too ( which is like very hard reach , which he didn’t want to apply and I forced him , and I added there). My bad. Yesterday was worse for me. But after talking during dinner, I am 100% confident that he will get admission on his college of his choice.
Has your S been accepted to GSU? Note that transfer from GSU to another 4 year school for CS will be very competitive as well.
As others have said the rest of the schools on his list are reaches for CS. Every one. Do you want posters to make suggestions for match/safety schools that may still be accepting applications?
For GT, make sure to complete the deferral supplement. https://admission.gatech.edu/defer Have your S speak with his GC, perhaps the GC will call GT on his behalf…use this option only if your S would attend if accepted.
GSU is on rolling admission, we do have time I think. I am worried now, but he is telling me not to worry, with his two years head of CS club, two years of IT internship in a reputed company, Eagle scout and all with all good grades he will get on one of those :), He will complete deferral supplement asap. His counselor of GSMST told us (stem school he attends) his school have CAPS on Tech admission. I don’t know what to believe at this point. All students these days are very smart with all good STATS. I will tell him to ask his GC ( is this general counselor) to talk, We are not sure if he attends . Also applied at Berkeley, Cal-tech, Yale, Cornell, UIC-Urbana, Stanford and RA at MIT(extreme high reach colleges) and , Perdue and UMICH which are also reach for him I guess At this point I can just pray.
Like make a poster ? I don’t think beside GSU, anyone is accepting applications at this point.
Looks like, we parents didn’t do homework well. First golden child and we are 100% screwed. We should have hired private admission counselor like most people I know were doing or should have read posts and whatnot at this forum. We thought small students STEM school have better counselor.
No, you - and your son- are not “100% screwed”. No, you didn’t need a private admissions counselor. I don’t know about the homework part, but one thing you might not have really understood is just how many ‘golden child’ applicants there are, especially at the top schools and especially for CS at the top schools.
You did everything you could; you son has a great resume and he will get in somewhere. You don’t know the outcomes yet, and it only takes one ‘yes’. All this angst will disappear in a heartbeat when a ‘yes’ rolls in, so know that and try not to let the anxiety of waiting get the better of you.
