I am applying to these 4 schools as a Junior transfer from the University of Oregon for this coming Spring 2014 semester.

I am applying as an Education major, but changing it right when I get there to either Political Science for Sociology.

I'm also hispanic, if that counts for anything?

My freshmen year grades are AWFUL. I picked doing pre-med because I thought I would enjoy it.. Completely wrong. So I changed my major in sophomore year and got a MUCh better GPA in my 2nd year. I wrote in the common app, explaining why I got a bad GPA first year

Freshman year: Basically a 2.0
Sophomore year: 3.6 (Dean's List winter term) got 7 A's out of 9 classes, but some of the A's were minuses.. Which count against me, which sucks.

I volunteer in an Elementary School special education classroom
I volunteer at an elderly home once a week

American University in Washington DC (have expressed interest by emailing with admissions counselor and going to their college fair beginning of November)
California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA
Chapman University in Orange, CA
Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles
Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA
University of Redlands in Redlands, CA (really hoping I get into other schools so I don't end up there)

I’m fine with not getting into Pepperdine… It’s too close to my house and I’d have to live at home since off-campus housing would be SO expensive (20 mins from house).
I have been showing enthusiasm for American, Chapman, and LMU (toured the campus)

I do not know much about Pepperdine, but from what it looks like you should have a great shot at each of the others. Make sure you help them see why you would be a great addition to their school upon your transfer. Props on figuring out what you want to do and getting your act together sophomore year, colleges will commend you for that.

Sorry for such late reply! Sadly, I don’t know anything about college to college transfer acceptance rate/anything that is related to it… so I don’t think I can give you an accurate answer… Sorry! Good Luck tho!

I’d definitely say all the schools, except pepperdine is probs a reach for you? but i mean, im not the greatest about stats for transfer students but you look pretty good for the other schools?

Ok, so Elementary Education is an admissions strategy. Good call.

Pepperdine remains more unsuitable than unreachable (as would Biola, Asuza, etc), Chapman is a match, Redlands is a match to safety, LMU is an academic match but depending on that “make it more Catholic” campaign goes might not be the most comfortable school for you.
American is the odd one out and a real reach for you. It’ll help if you don’t need FA, as I expect you don’t.

If it came down to Redlands or UO, would you rather stay at UO or attend Redlands? Is there another possibility for you (Lewis&Clark, Willamette, Walla-Walla…) that you might consider?

Would you apply to schools similar to AU, but less selective or of similar selectivity, on the East Coast? Or, if you have to move East, can it only be for this specific school or that caliber ?

Is your list fixed or do you want more suggestions?

I think that in cases with medium GPAs it really comes down to other aspects of your application. Try as hard as you can to convey your intellectual curiosity, potential to succeed, and enthusiasm throughout your essays and personal statements.
