I was wondering how many indians get into MIT every year?
I heard something like 2. Really?

I posted a Chance thread in MIT forum and was wondering if some indians can give a perspective:

Thanks.

No probably 5-8

There’s no fixed quota.
In 2011 there were just 2 people who got in and in 2012 5-6 got in from India.

2-18 get in.

Getting into a school like MIT from India is very hard, but not impossible. For example, all of the Indians who got into MIT in 2011 had Gold/Silver medals at the IMO/IOI

There were 33 indians in my batch (including myself), Your chances are okayish but largely depend on the the pool of applicants you’re against.

PS: Your SAT-2 scores are quite low, any specific reason for that ? Most Intl students who get bad score in SAT-1 (due to their subpar english), show that they’re good at the core subjects (ie. maths, physics, chem etc… depending on their expected major).

Although if the allegations in that thread are true, you ought to worry.

The OP of this thread is a ■■■■■ :’)
Go read his so called chance thread with his spectaaaacular ecs :P

33 sounds right to me. International is a tough, tough road. But GL

Great Extracurriculars and achievements but honestly, chances at MIT are very bleak. Better chances at CMU and Berkeley.

@rickg88 When did you apply?? Class of ???

xNorth22 - I agree. One of my friends told me about him. :p

No, the OP is not a ■■■■■. Most of his ECs are factually correct. However, some are grossly exaggerated and very misleading. Also, being as young as he is, immaturities stand out in his laundry list of ECs.

International Informatics Olympiad
For one, and most importantly, you were not in the International Informatics Olympiad. I have a fair idea who the OP is, but I don’t want to reveal his identity because of CC privacy issues.
Indian Computing Olympiad - Current - IARCS
If you go through the last x years of this site, I could not find you. You’ve either given a fake IOI, or are simply lying. It is nowhere near the level of the real IOI, and it’s inadvisable or stupid to try to pass this off unless you want to convince me one of the people on the link I posted is you. If you were one of those people, however, you would stand a significant chance. In fact, two people who qualified from the INOI in the past 3 years are at MIT.

This is college, not your next girlfriend.
Love to swim whenever i can.
What a cool boy.
Enthusiastic Horse rider.
I like to run laps enthusiastically. MIT should accept me, right?
Have been part of the school Football team throughout high school and am referred to as The Wall or the Go to man in times of crisis. Have played for my school in inter-school competitions, and my name has come in national . Securing First Rank countlessly in grade 9,10 and 11 in various competitions.
Since when does football have ranks? Don’t brag dude. The things you’ve written sound really stupid. Adcoms aren’t idiots.
Leadership
Decent, but colleges see this all the time. Unless you can expand on your leadership and show how important it really was, this doesn’t matter. Creating a club at Pathways is no big deal.
Worked part-time in a Manufacturing Facility (Danghzou Corporation)in China to gain experience of the fastest growing country in the world, overlooking all operations under the guidance of the president.
If they let an 18-year old overlook all operations, I’m uncertain as to how credible this company is.
Started 6 companies and currently manage a user base exceeding 1 million users of my products
I’ve seen your website, bro. While a lot of your achievements ARE pretty cool, when you brag about it like this, not only I, but everyone else sees straight through them. You created 6 websites for the most part. This is not equivalent to creating 6 companies. Unless you have a profit making business with some hard figures that are impressive, this is just bragging. It IS impressive, but in trying to make it sound cooler than it is, you turn people off.
Ranked amongst the top 1 percentile in all subjects in Grade XI for IB Exams in my school ( 40+ students)
If a 31 on IB puts you first in school, that’s not saying much about your school. I know one person at MIT in the Class of 2015 and she got a 45 in her IB. Also, 40 is a small number.
SAT 1: Superscore of 1890 , 660 Math , 650 CR , 580 Writing
SAT 2 Maths : 600 , Attempted physics in jan : expecting 650ish
From my experience, this is why you’re not gonna make it. Screw the SAT I. I know people who are brilliant who have similar SAT Is and are in MIT. But the SAT II Math just shows that you suck at Math. I’m being brutal here, but its true. To survive at MIT, or any other decent engineering college, you’re going to be brutalized with rigorous Math and Physics, and if you cant show that youre awesome at this, you’re not getting in even if you’re Bill Gates in the making.

To someone only 3 years older, do you know how stupid this sounds?
Other Notable Activities
I dunno if you’re exaggerating here or not, but if you’re website is trustworthy, this IS impressive and this does give you an outside chance of getting in. It’s not a big one though. You have to brag less about it. You can market yourself with humility too. You sounds like you’re bragging a lot.
Also developed a MIT iPhone and Android App to showcase my talent , launching next week
This is hilarious. You think anybody has the time to download your app to look at your talents? I think a personal website is good enough.
Final Word
You’re a good applicant, but you’re overconfident. You should have focussed more on your SAT I and SAT II and at least a little bit on your IB scores. You’re an impressive young kid who doesn’t know the line between impressive and ridiculously stupid. You have to understand where you lie in the bigger scheme of things. Yes, you might be a stud compared to everyone your age. Yes, everyone must always tell you how awesome you are. On paper, no one knows this. They don’t care. You come off as a I-think-I’m-awesome 17-year old boy. Be a little humble. It’ll get you places.

“There were 33 indians in my batch (including myself), Your chances are okayish but largely depend on the the pool of applicants you’re against.”

They are not from India. The ones that count against India are those who do not have US citizenship or greencard.

MIT has about 100 seats each year for international admissions. They typically have 5-8 in each batch. All of undergrad has about 30 students allocated to India.

LOL - Teslaboy went through a lot of pain & research to type that I guess!! But what he said is absolutely right!!

I checked out the OPs website & a bit of his credentials - and though it looks brilliant on the outside, it is actually not much. Also, he seems to be in love with himself!! Pride is one thing no college wants, and just a look at his website will cause the adcoms to turn him down.

His ECs seem good, but there is no point in talking about them - because all top colleges (and especially MIT) will reject him outright just because he won’t be able to handle the course rigor.

Sometimes hooks such as exceptional ECs can help compensate for a low SAT 1 (given that you’ve shown English proficiency through some other method). However if a 600 Math II & 650 Phy applicant gets into engineering at MIT(or any other top university) - I’d rather kill myself. Even if your IB scores are ~40, it won’t help you!!

Fact is, there are thousands of applicants from India vying for 5-8? spots. MIT can be as choosy as it wants as most of these applicants have glowing ECs, SATs, grades, etc.

On hindsight - this thread is a waste of time. The OP ain’t gonna get in at any cost whatsoever!! Haha!!
(It’s hilarious actually - how the CC users on that thread went from total awe to “investigating” into him and then laughing at him!! :p

A word of caution to any future hopeful - Never, ever lie to boost your ECs - everyone can see through them!

Hey Rishav…go on chance me pls???;)

^ Link?? I have to have 10 characters… :p

@rishav. Just read the link. Quite disappointing that this kid is a fraud. Purdues not a bad college for him but he’ll probably not be able to make the academic cut

This guy reminds me of Arindam Chaudhuri

This guy is worse.

He’d give Arindam a run for his money, trust me.
I know the guy. You have no idea how he is. Well im not gonna rant about it, but just say, that good luck to him. Even if he does attend MIT, SOMEHOW, i doubt he’ll be able to keep up with the rigor and/or have a good time there. But oh well, id leave it all to god :)
