:) Chance for baltimore

I've decided to apply RD to Johns Hopkins U. I'm going into the science part since I want to do premed.

I know the whole thing may seem pointless to some, but what I am asking is that you only tell me if I'm good enough...not necessarily if I get in or not (b/c that's kind of luck's game). Please share your honest opinions. Thanks!

personal essay: wrote on chemistry. I know my exam scores don't reflect my class performance (which was stellar) and love for the subject. The SAT II was a bit too fast for me...and I'm one of those ppl who likes to take my time. Also, it was my first encounter with the real SAT II, so I think I might have choked somewhere in between.

Please help me out. Thank you again.

I don’t think you are a competitive applicant with those standardized test scores. Your GPA is fine but your SAT I and SAT II will bring you down immensely. Still, go for it!

You’re going to have to present your extracurricular involvement better. I know that the rule of thumb is “Depth > Breadth” but breadth still counts for something, albeit not too much. Service club and science bowl doesn’t give me the feeling that you’ve spent LOTS of time in those clubs. But I haven’t seen your application so that’s just my speculation. Your GPA is more than enough for Hopkins and your course rigor is excellent. The only things that are going to harm you are your SAT and SATII scores.

This year’s Hopkins is going to be tougher than last year’s, which had a 20% acceptance rate. For this year’s RD, I’m guessing 17-20% admit rate, so you’re going to have to definitely stand out among the crowd to get into Hopkins RD.

:( I know, I completely agree with the above statements. By the way, I have been in both clubs for a long time, and truly have committed myself. Although I may not have won many awards in science bowl…I still worked very hard in organizing the club and regulating practice rounds. For the service club, I remember staying afterschool to set up for a lot of activities. I don’t know if I’ll include it in my essay b/c I want to talk about another topic that has really won me over during my HS years.

Anything else?

Redemption, I’m not sure how that makes sense. Her UW GPA is below average; however, her course rigor is strong.

Generally, a somewhat high UW GPA and a low SAT/ACT score signals grade inflation at your school. And in this case, I do definitely think there is a gap between your performance in school and on standardized tests.

It will be a reach: UW GPA is below average, SAT scores are below average, and nothing stands out.

I’m not trying to be excessively harsh; Johns Hopkins admissions is just very rigorous.

Good luck on your application!

Before you assume my school does inflation…let me say that it is far from that. In fact, all my courses in 11th grade were extremely hard. I was the top student in all of my courses. It’s just that SAT gives less time, and I don’t like it at all. I don’t find it fair that a student’s four years of belaborment be ignored in face of the below average SAT score. I for one have taken 3 college courses (yes I took them during the academic year at a very well recognized institute; university of minnesota) where I received A+s and As in.

“I don’t find it fair that a student’s four years of belaborment be ignored in face of the below average SAT score.”

I’m sorry but if that’s the case, then the average SAT score of Johns Hopkins would go down and that is not good for the school. Plus, more applicants would be wanting to apply. It’s just a sad reality that we all have to accept. I’m in a similar position as you are in, and I just know it’s gonna be difficult.

true lol. If classes could only be taught by robots…so everything would be uniform, and we won’t have to take the SATs :D

Well I don’t blame JHU for that. In fact, ppl only go to such institutes to meet smart kids, and if just anyone were to be admitted, intelligent pupils won’t be attracted. Sad reality, but then the essays aren’t for nil. But anyone who scores above the 2000s, I admit that they are pretty darn smart. I guess I should not apply and just hope to be admitted grad school. I know JHU is a reach…but then why fare the apprehension when there is little chance of being accepted. Thanks guys, I’ll try my best in my undergrad years! :D
