Chance for Bowdoin ED/Middlebury/Bates/Colby etc?

I am in my Senior year, taking the hardest classes possible, actually going beyond what the school would have originally aloud me to do, which would have been a limit of 4 AP classes, but taking 5. I have an upward trend. Bowdoin is my top school and I would like to apply ED to it, but I am not sure if it would be a waste of ED. I know my test scores are not good, so I will not be submitting.

I am looking at:
Williams
Amherst
Bowdoin
Colby
Colgate
Bates
Any other suggestions?

*I am looking to major in Bio/chem

These are my main reach schools, I will be cutting it down to probably about 4 of these. But I was wondering my chances

I will be finding out about ELC(top 4%) soon

The schools on your list that are not test optional are unrealistic with current scores.

On another thread you tell a poster that Dartmouth is not out of reach with an under 2000 score if he writes a good essay. This is not how it works, take a look at common data sets to understand the reality of what it takes to get into top schools.

You’re aiming very high, are UCs your safeties?

Your test scores are far too low. Your only chance is to not submit them.

Are you a URM? That would be a big hook for smaller, rural schools.

You totally have a shot for Colgate and Bates. Amherst seems too far out, but it can’t hurt to apply.

Im asian, so I dont think that really considers as URM. I already know Williams, Amherst, and Midd are huge reaches. But is Bowdoin, Colby, and Bates in reach? Is it a waste to apply ED to Bowdoin? I know that it is really selective, but I think that not submitting tests scores will help me out more than submitting them. Would it be smart to apply to Colby as ED II if Bowdoin doesnt work out?
I am also applying to UCSB and UC Davis as back ups. I am applying to UC’s as a second option(not really as a back up), but I would much rather go to a LAC in the northeast/east

I’m planning to apply tro Bowdoin ED and I too am asian soo I would also like to know if Bowdoin considers asians to be a URM. Anyone?

Might look at Holy Cross very good LAC with strong science programs and new $70 million science building. Bowdoin is close to Amherst and Williams in admissions. Colgate is very remote. Holy Cross offers summer internsips and is SAT-optional.

Do you think that Bowdoin would be out of reach for me then? That is my main question, Would it be a real out of reach school, to the point where it would be a waste to even apply ED? I dont want to waste me ED on a school that will be way to out of reach for me. Would Colby be a better option? I was thinking about applying ED II for Colby, but I honestly love Bowdoin.

I don’t think Colby is actually test-optional. They allow you to submit 3 SAT IIs instead of the SAT or ACT but that won’t really help you unless you take 3 and your scores go up. Being from CA should help you, but Bowdoin might still be a reach. Bates would be a safer bet. Not sure if they offer ED II. Please have a human being proofread your essay - in your initial post you wrote aloud instead of allowed and that would be a disaster in an essay. Good luck!

Go ahead and apply to Bowdoin. Why not? Your gpa, AP load and ECs may show you as their sort of student. I believe they will like the Habitat, Spcl Olympics and tutoring. if you love Bowdoin- and would always regret NOT applying- go for it. Just know that admissions is highly competitive.

URM: The Bowdoin Orient, 4/30/10: “We don’t have minority recruitment,” said Associate Dean of Admissions and Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment Elmer Moore. “But multicultural and diversity recruitment.” Moore defined diversity as “people from various perspectives such as geography, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, political ideology, religion, height and so on.”

This is from their web: note that they include Asians in this seeming URM breakout.
Percentage of Students of Color in the FY Class of 2013: 31%
■7% African-American or Black
■10% Asian-American or Pacific Islander
■14% Hispanic-Latino, Chicano, or Puerto Rican
■1% American Indian or Alaskan Native

Good luck.
Whatever you decide, make the app, essay and supplements shine.

Ya, I understand that Bowdoin is very selective and I will be in a very competitive pool. I just want to make sure that my ED is still a decent shot, because I dont want to waste my ED at a school that I have almost no chance at(ie Williams and Amherst)

The only problem that I see is that although you have a very good GPA, your AP SAT II scores dont really reflect your high GPA but other than that I feel like you have a descent chance (I’m applying to Bowdoin ED too! Hope we can both get in! :D)

Ya, I did not really plan out my studying well enough. I really hope I do have a shot that, Bowdoin is probably my dream school right now and it would make it all the better to get in early.

the question is…what was your GPA freshman year?

It seems odd to me that your GPA is so high yet your AP’s, ACT’s, and SAT’s are so low (considering the requirements of such schools)…I’m applying ED to Colby but all the schools on your list are good choices!

So i found out that I got ELC. Which means I am in the top 4% of my class. I know my SAT/AP scores dont match up…Im really not a good test taker. Do I have a decent chance at Bates and Colby? I really like these schools too.

Well the thing is that when you compare your low standardized testing scores with your high GPA, it kind of says something about the weak rigor of your high school curriculum but it may also show that despite that you strive to take on a respectable workload…I say you still have a chance and I encourage you to apply but I myself dont have much experience with college admissions so maybe you should talk to your guidance counselor. Good luck!

Bates and Colby are within reach, back-ups to Bowdoin. Bates is test optional.
Sushi brings up the elephant in the room- if gpa far outpaces SAT/AP scores, it can look like the hs is not that rigorous, that A’s are easy.
Adcoms will know the quality of your hs- and view your gpa accordingly. (They will at least know academic trends in your area. Your hs will also provide a profile.)
All this means, put together a super app package, great essay and short answers; frame your ECs well. Do NOT lose confidence- just put the energy into this. Do your best. Remem, your course load, volunteering and tutoring will be impressive.

Okay, I will be working really hard on my essays. My teacher reccs will also be pretty good. Would I have a better chance if i get a 30+ on the ACT? I know 30 would still be a little on the low end, but would it be worth it to turn in my ACT scores? Also, would I be in decent standing for Colby ED II, if Bowdoin doesnt work out? Would being from California give me a better chance in any way?
