My son is interested in Bowdoin and the above; we are visiting in the fall. His GPA is just under 3.7 (a family tragedy, losing his dad in sophomore year) saw his grades fall. (This is a partial repeat on a former post, thanks for your patience)This is a brief sketch:

Junior year classes:

English: A
Advanced Calc A
Advanced Chem: A
French 4: A
US History: A

Senior Year Coursework:
English
Multivariable Calculus
Physics
Cultural History of the West
French 5

School does not offer AP, but he has taken Chem: 5; Calc BC: 5, Stat AP score: 4

ECs:
Rows with a highly competitive rowing team, not recruitable but highly valued by his coaches;
Volunteered on marriage equality campaign and worked with state legislator (now mayor) on the issue;
Summer coursework in great books at St. Johns College
Paid summer internship in School of Global Health at our University (which he sought out based on a research project he did in 9th grade)--sophomore year;
Selected as an intern for an NIH funded program for outstanding science students at our University cancer consortium, working with stem cells in liquid tumors;
Accomplished white water kayaker

SAT composite: 2350
SAT subjects 800 (math 2); 780 (Eng Lit)

Really wants a competitive college; he is a great math/science kid but he loves the humanities as well--that's the appeal of a LAC or school like the U of C.

His recommendations will be terrific and his college counselors plans to address his grades and courage sophomore year. His rowing coach also wants to write.

So I know he is within the realm of reason--that he won't be laughed out of the room for applying to any of these schools, but all mom's think their kid is great and I'm no exception. Thanks for any insight!
