Chance for chance (Tufts, Middlebury, JHU, Penn)

If y’all could chance me, it would be greatly appreciated and I’ll chance back when I get the chance.

Scores:
SAT: 2140–750 CR, 690 M, 700 W (that was my first time, and am aiming to get them up 50-100 points next time, god willing)
SAT II: Latin-710, Lit-780

GRADES: My school doesn’t do GPA or rank, but I’m generally a B+/A- student (A’s in English and history, B’s and B+'s in math, science, and honors Latin). Latin is my only honors class, but my school doesn’t offer honors classes in the humanities, which are my strong suit. My school is widely recognized as one of the top private schools in the northeast–if not the whole country-- though

ECs: Had a personal essay selected to be included in The Best Teen Writing of 2015 anthology put together by Scholastic (one of the 63 pieces chosen out of 300,000+ submissions)
-2015 National Gold Medalist for Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition
-Interned at Rolling Stone and got a 1000 word feature published on the website.
-3-year section editor on my school newspaper
-Started a humor magazine at my school
-Teaching a journalism mini course this year
-2 year varsity fencer.
-have won 3 short story, 1 poetry, and 3 personal essay contests at my school (7 in total, and every one that I’ve entered).

Recs: One of them is probably a 9/10 (an English teacher who is really, very quite fond of me) and is probably a 7.5/10 (a Latin teacher who I don’t do so well for, but has known me since 6th grade and seems to like me)

Essay: Not finished, but I have reason to think it will probably be pretty good.

@knicksfan Your SAT score looks good, maybe a bit below average for the top Ivies, but it’s fine none the less and will keep you a competitive applicant. Your GPA is obviously a bit low – I’d approximate it to be 3.5 on a 4.0 UW scale and 90 on a 100 UW scale, which is lower than average for these uber-competitive colleges.

Your ECs look awesome, however, and show a true passion for writing. You may want to look into Northwestern, Syracuse and Boston University as well.

I would say you’re a reach for UPenn – almost everyone is a reach there, and admissions at Ivies are unpredictable. You definitely have a shot and I would apply ED to boost chances if Penn is truly where you want to be.

You’re a low reach/high match for JHU, which is also a very selective place.

I don’t know too much about Tufts and Middlebury, so I’ll leave those places up to other CCers to chance.

You don’t need to chance me back :).

Looks like you’re also a low reach/high match for Tufts and Middlebury. You’re definitely in the ballpark. At LACs other factors will come into play - you’re geographic location, your sex, your race, etc. Keep up the good work.

Your SAT score is average for these schools while your GPA is below average. However, your ECs are excellent. You’ve shown both leadership and talent in writing and journalism, which will set you apart in the admissions process despite a low GPA. That being said, I’d give you these odds for these schools:

Tufts - high match
Middlebury - high match
Johns Hopkins - low reach
UPenn - reach (as it is for most people)
