Chance for Cornell CAS??

Before you start, thanks for even entering this thread... the ugliest mark by far on my transcript is a 79 average in junior year precalc (regrettable slacking), would this be sort of counterbalanced by a perfect Math II score and math team participation? Otherwise all grades are 90+ (unweighted). Will this one math grade destroy my chances at CAS?

Indian, IB candidate, enrolled in highest level courses available
SAT 2290 (720 E, 780 M, 790 W)
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 770 Chemistry
GPA: 98.6 (weighted)
Misc: Science Olympiad four years, Varsity Math Team three years, Engineering club four years (top three in national engineering competition), school literary publication (poetry, prose, etc.) one year, conducted bio/psych research two years, Gay-Straight Cooperation Club two years, taught English over summer to foreigners

Thank you for taking the time to chance.

Anyone? All input is appreciated.

You have as good a chance as any other applicant with your stats. Wishing you all the best in the admissions process.

The thing about a school like Cornell is that there are lots of good applicants who are not accepted just because of the sheer volume of kids that apply.

That being said, I think your stats are competitive, and you should apply. You have a good chance.

How much does a single C impact my chances?

i have noticed, to put it bluntly, that copymxkii is an A$$.

What’s your rank?

It looks like you have a decent shot, especially if you’re planning on applying Early.

Hey, thanks for responding. My school claims not to rank, but I am definite that I’m in the top 10% of my class… which isn’t saying much. EDIT: Also, I am planning on applying ED.

@petrovich: Cornell CAS: Low Reach

You have really impressive standardized test scores and overall transcript, and if you write about something you are really passionate/interested in for your essay, i think you have a good chance.

Chance me back? : )

@copyxmkiii: because its hard to judge your own experiences without bias : /

@copyxmkiii: just nervous about the whole application process – you could say to each his own

@copyxmkiii: I post in this forum because I think its helpful to receive other people’s suggestions about an application (whether its positive or negative).

This is actually quite a pointless argument; if you think this whole process is useless then why are you commenting in this thread?

I’m pretty sure that petrovich did not want you to be here arguing about whether or not chance threads are justified.

I appreciate the input, but one thing is still bothering me–I received a 79 in junior year mathematics, and all my other grades are A’s and up. This is a pretty major inconsistency, right? I also scored an 800 on my Math II SAT and participate on varsity math team… how much does a single outstandingly bad grade affect my chances if my other math-related endeavors indicate otherwise, so to say? Thanks… and sorry for the wall of text.

Anyone? I’m worried about this grade.

^
No one can say for sure. Even if all other components of your app are fine, if the admissions officer reading your file isn’t having a good day and gets caught up by that C you have, you might get rejected. On the other note, one C by itself doesn’t disqualify you from getting admission. Admissions at top schools are somewhat subjective, and there is a degree of uncertainty.

=/ Do you personally think that it would make a big difference?

^
not big, but a moderate amount of difference, i’d say. think of it this way: the admissions rep reading your file may choose to admit you if your app stands out to him, but he may reject your file and choose another candidate without any C’s, even if that other candidate may have slightly lower SAT’s or whatnot. It all depends on the person reading your file and the general strength/ competitiveness of the applicant pool. If the person reading your file thinks that a C is a big deal, you may run out of luck. it is all subjective.

Do you think the grade merits an explanation of some sort–maybe a letter?
