Chance for Cornell ED and CMU ED

Hello, I want to ED Cornell for Computer Science major and Can you see what my chance is for ED?

My G.P.A : 98 Weighted (not including senior years)
(My school does not report U.W.)

Rank: 15% of 550

-My freshman year when I had ESL and all the "regular" classes ruined my rank.

Classes

-Except for some freshman and sophomore Advanced classes such as English honors, Science honors, I have all advanced classes (AP and IB).

-I've done many challenging attempts such as taking "AP physics" without taking physics(our school makes it so student takes physics honors before going into AP) or taking Calculus without taking Trig

SAT
- 1990(R: 540 M: 760 W: 680)
- Taking in this October. In many practice SATs, I have been getting around 2100

SAT II

US: 680 Math 2: 780 Chem: 680

AP tests and IB test

US: 4 CS: 3 (had a bad teacher...T.T)

IB math: 6 out of 7

ACT

Signed up for October one. I won't be getting the result by the deadline.
You think I can ask admission if I can send it later?

EC'S

-Charter member of Mathlete (12-13, 13-14?)
-Officer of AOIT (it is "computer department" for school) (12-14)
-Excutive member of computer club(13-14)
-Virtual Company as an internship (Company that are made up of students of AOIT); we made websites for clients for free
-Community Service at Senior Center
-Community Service, Tutoring ESL students for short period of time.
-Tech honor society
-Foreign language honor society (likely)
-Local Youth Soccer League
-Science Olympiad (not an officer)
-Worked at Restaurant as a bus boy.(short period of time)

Background History

-Came to US in 8th grade
-My Sophomore year was my first year after ESL
-Annual Earning: around 30000
-Korean

Additional Questions

-Would I have a better chance if I apply as "undecided" ?
-If so, How hard is it to major in CS after or during the first year ?
-What score for SAT and ACT do I need to improve my chance?
-As for the Essay, What topics look most "viable" or "interesting" to you?

From living in one of the riches town to one of the "below average" town, and changes there were within family

Fear of death (I think too much almost at the point of phobia)

Was game addict (not medically proven, but it affected my life greatly. Everyone around me told me it was an illness)

Match with that GPA and at the very, very, least, a 2100 on the SAT.

Bunpity bump bump

First off, I really dislike this question:

If you want to do CS, then apply for CS. Not undecided. It won’t help you in the least for almost any college you apply to and certainly not Cornell or CMU. In any case, you don’t decide a major at Cornell until after you get in. You will be applying to the College of Engineering, so it doesn’t matter what major you apply for. The acceptance rate is the same.

You should try to get your SAT up to about a 2100 (preferably better like someone mentioned) or at least a 32 on the ACT.

As for your essays, I think the first would be your best bet but you’ll have to decide for yourself there (I’m guessing this is for the Common App right? The Cornell supplement prompts are very different).

Overall it’s a reach. You have a good weighted GPA, but try to get your SAT up or take the ACT if it seems easier for you. You mentioned CMU as well, and it’s also a reach.

Thank you for the insightful reply. Is it a reach with my current SAT or expected SAT score (2100). Does my ECs look good enough for you?

Your ECs aren’t bad or anything, and some of the things you’ve done demonstrate your interest in CS which is good (eg: your website internship). However, there isn’t anything that really makes you stand out in the applicant pool. Overall however, I think your ECs are okay.

Well Cornell/CMU are definitely big reaches with a 1990. Even with a 2100 (or 2250+ for that matter), they will still be reaches. These are schools that reject top applicants all the time and therefore are difficult to call matches for anyone.

I really appreciate your reply. I have few more questions.

Is there anything that can be a good EC I can do now?

Let say, I got 2100 on October SAT, do you think I should apply to Cornell ED or take another in November and apply RD? Is there a big difference in acceptance rate between RD and ED?

I live in NY, and my school has a pretty good acceptance rate at Cornell(past four years, 30/ 100 or something) does that increase my chance at Cornell?

What are my chances for University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigne, University of Chicago, University of Michigan at ann arbor, and other top notch CS school you know?

Again, thank you :]

i would say you have fair chance at cornell - going off your last post if you are really interested in computer science than i would highly recommend u of i - like you said! have you visited any of these schools and did you like them? in terms of scores just raise it as much as you can times running out a bit so dont freak out too much whats done is done and good luck
if you have the time to chance back id appreciate it so much http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1559310-uc-berkeley-chances-happy-chance-other-people-too.html

CoE is fairly self selecting; they have a high accept rate ED because many/most people who get in have high, high GPA and SAT numbers (not all of course, but this seems to be the trend). You’ll need high test scores to get in there.
If they know your school…that’s pretty good, so they know what kind of courses and background y’all are from (we “know” cornell pretty well, 32 applied last year alone, 8 got in)
CMU: Low reach (show some registered interest…)
Umich ann arbor: Low reach/high match
Uchicago: reach
UIUC: Match
Gtech: Match
Purdue: Low match

Last two are really worth looking into since C/S and engineering will be in your future. I wish you the best in your college search!

Chance back? Also Cornell ED…

Bump Bump
Just need few more opinions

Don’t just come up with extracurricular activities to impress colleges; they’ll see right through it… just do what you like and you’ll be fine. This is especially true now that you’re a senior because if you start putting up activities on the common app that say that you’ve been doing x for 1 month it really won’t look good.

I think a 2100 is a decent score. If you like Cornell, then apply ED. However, that’s up to you and if you think you want to take the ACT or something after you get your score back then go ahead and apply RD. However, Cornell’s acceptance rate does go up a little bit for early applicants (but also know their applicant pool becomes slightly more competitive)

30/100 is near the acceptance rate for early decision anyways. Nothing too advantageous there.

4.And assuming you get a 2100…
UIUC - High Match - Low Reach (difficult for OOS for CS)
UChicago - Reach (not so good for CS anyways in my opinion)
UMich Ann Arbor - High Match

Other CS schools you might want to consider applying to (there are a lot of good state schools that offer a good CS program):

GTech as someone mentioned,
UW Madison
UC Berkeley (if you’re okay with going out west)
U of Maryland
CMU (sort of a reach though)

CMU is beyond a reach for computer science – it is their most competitive program. Here are the CMU CS acceptance stats for 2017:

CR: 720-780 Math: 780-800 Wr: 720-780 Rank: 5% GPA: 3.85
