Chance for Cornell RD?

So, I know Chance threads aren't really accurate, but I really just want to get a gist of where I stand at the moment. I really want to go to Cornell, but I feel that I can't show any level of interest (no interview & can't do campus visits). Does Cornell consider interest heavily?

Anyway, here's kind of a resume:

Stats:
SAT I (by section): not sending (but 2050 Composite)
SAT IIs: 760 Math 2, 760 Bio M
ACT: 31 (35 E, 34 M, 29 R, 27 S; 31 E&W)
APs: World History (4), Psychology (5), Macroeconomics (4), Spanish Language (4), English Language (3), U.S. History (5), Biology (3-will retake), Spanish Literature (this year), Chemistry (this year), Government (this year), English Literature (this year), and Calculus BC (this year)
GPA (UW, W): UW - 3.9ish; W- 5.5ish/ 6.0
Rank: 9 / 791 students
Other stats:
Subjective:
ECs listed on app: Tutoring Webpage (founder & administrator) [3 years], Health Occupations Students of America [3 years], Literary Magazine Club (Assistant Editor) [1 year], Academic Challange - NAQT/ Quiz Bowl (Assistant Coach) [2 years], Asian American Club [2 years], Mu Alpha Theta Tutor [2 years], Computer Science Club [1 year]
Job/Work Experience: Volunteering at Methodist Hospital & St. Luke's Hospital for 1 summer each (about 50 hours each); Volunteered at Aunt's Ob/Gyn Clinic
Essays (subject and responses): Engineering - talked about an engineering idea; my passion really showed through; Arts & Science - talked about hospital background/ love for science; again passion showed through
Teacher Recs: 3 - good
Additional Recs: Principal from our school; one of the professors at Cornell
Counselor Rec: Generic (we're not so close)
Applied on (EA?): Nope
Hook (if any): None
Location/Person:
Intended Major: Engineering/ Science (Pre-Med)
State or Country: Houston, Texas (don't they only take about 6% from South :/)
School Type: Public 5A
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

I know I really don't have any Science/ Math EC to be considered for engineering, but I really exhibited my passion for science, innovation, engineering, and research.

Thanks for your responses - it really helps!

Reach.

Asian ORM.

ACT is under average. SAT IIs are fine.

ECs show diversity, and are fine, but not outstanding.

Job experience is nice, shows a passion in medical science/engineering

Rec from professor at Cornell is unique.

Good luck!

I thought 31 was in the range for Cornell’s 30-33 Average?

Cornell School of Engineering is one of then hardest to get into at Cornell. 7.5% acceptance rate compared to 16% for the whole university. 31 on the ACT and lack of engineering ECs might not cut it.

Should I then apply to CAS instead of CoE? Maybe put it as the alternate choice…?

Also, how easy is it to transfer to engineering at Cornell?

It’s a reach, but go ahead and apply. You’ve still got a shot.

Everything on your application is competitive except your ACT scores, so you won’t be out of the game from day 1, and could compare reasonably with other applicants. Try to express a lot of interest too.

Cornell doesn’t consider interest. I don’t know where you heard they only take 6% of the South… Maybe their student body is only 6% from the south but that doesn’t indicate to admissions rate for the entire region. Also you would have better chances I think if you applied CAS.

How about chances for Biological Engineering - CALS?

Universities say that - however, they all like to protect their yield. Why do you think all these colleges have a “Why us?” essay - Cornell included. Cornell’s contract colleges are in fact, ESPECIALLY about fit. No one gets into Architecture, ILR, or Hotel if they don’t fit.

Alternate choice VERY rarely works out for anyone at all. I think 5% or less applicants get into their alternate choice after getting rejected from primary.

No. If CoE is the school for you, then apply there. It is easiest to get into the school where you fit in most.

Just fyi, a recc from a professor at the school will likely hold no SPECIAL value if they just reiterate over things that other teachers from your school have said. A cornell professor’s recc to Cornell will be equally valued as an identical from another school. If they don’t contribute anything new to the application, then you shouldn’t even bother using the recc.

When I said they don’t consider interest I meant they hopefully don’t penalize people for not making it up to Ithaca to visit campus. But yeah, they mostly gauge interest/fit by the essay for the school you write.
