I recall reading somewhere about the eligibility index “add ons” like specific math courses add points, or working adds points. If you all know of a link to the eligibility index link with the myriad of “add ons” I would greatly appreciate it.
She is open to four different majors: Business (admin, economics, marketing, international); Communications or linguistics; Cognitive Science; and Anthropology.
Her picks so far are:
Cal Poly Slo (please indicate which major for chancing)
Cal Maritime for biz
SDSU
Chico State
UC Santa Cruz
UC Santa Barbara
UC Merced
I know her stats are not as high as many of the students here, but she would really love to attend one of these schools, especially Cal Poly SLO or SDSU.
If you all know of which major she should apply for at the specific school please let me know.
Thanks!
Eligibility Index is used by all Cal states except SLO which uses MCA points. The add on points for extra Math, is part of SLO’s MCA point calculation. What major for SLO? GPA is a large part of the MCA points so it will hurt her chances even with good test scores.

SDSU EI of 4100+ can be competitive.
Chico State an EI of 3700+ is competitive.
Maritime is an odd choice and I have no EI data.
UC’s tend to be very GPA focused so here are admit rates but not major specific:
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:
UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 15%
UCSB: 14%
UCI: 13%
UCSC: 59%- High Match/ Low Reach
UCR: 78%- Match
UCM: 92%-Safety
Best of luck to her and look for more Match and Safety schools.
Thanks, looks like MCA 3896.47
Here MCA looks competitive, but she will have to make a decision on major.
Thank you. Major for Cal Poly would probably be Anthropology, Linguistics, Business or City Planning
Sorry but for some reason I read the MCA score as 4896.67 and I do not want to give her false information or get her hopes up. Her MCA score is actually low for all but the City Planning major which has a high acceptance rate. Business looks like a tough admit. Anthropology is possible and I do not see a Linguistics major for SLO. If she would be happy pursuing the City planning major, she should consider it or SLO will probably be a Reach.
https://www.csum.edu/web/admissions/future-impaction describes the California Maritime Academy additional requirements for impacted majors there.
If you do apply for city planning just be aware that most city planning jobs require a masters degree.
It is a fine list… I think she’ll get into Cal Maritime for biz, SDSU, Chico State and UC Merced but, the others are worth an ap.
You must know that Cal Maritime isn’t like your typical college and that their biz program is very logistics and transportation-centric.
I think I’d add UCR (which could go either way) and CSULB - both have outstanding biz programs.
